fashion nowadays is so boring now. as someone who really loves fashion it kinda hurts to see what became of it. i look back at the styles of the generations before us and they all have something we seem to be lacking; a feeling of love. so why has that started to disappear?? could have to do with the quality of clothes now?? with companies like shein and temu rising in popularity for their low prices other brands now have more incentive to lower their prices to try and keep their customer base shopping with them. but in order to do this they have to do things like changing the materials used to still be able to profit from the clothes they sell, often resorting to polyester as its one of the cheapest. ironically though, by doing this the quality of their clothes drops, giving customers less reason to shop with them, turning many customers towards other brands and buying second hand.
another reason i feel this lack of passion is microtrends. the rise of social media has sped up the trend cycle drastically as anyone can now be famous, the catch is they will usually only get about 10 mins of fame before theyre forgotten to time. because of this many people with unique styles get popular for their style, people start trying to replicate it, the creator of the style gets forgotten and so does the trend - though it will outlive the creators fame by about a month or 2. the style will also be severely watered down during this, losing most of its defining characteristics and being restricted to about 4 outfits.
to build onto this point, people seem to only dress in a more unique way online, when you see them in person they look like everyone else. i dont understand this, whats the point in having a whole section of your wardrobe that only gets worn for about 10 mins while you film tiktoks in your room. why go through so much hassle to find cool clothes to not wear them. and a lot of the clothes they wear are so expensive too, like is that not such a waste of money. it will never make sense to me.
ive also noticed how people nowadays seem to be completely unable to identify the key elements of a style and dress according to those. instead they seem to have to replicate exact outfits, which leads to styles becoming unoriginal and all semblance of meaning they once held. its gotten so out of hand to the point that if people on tiktok see you call yourself a certain style and youre not wearing one of their 3 approved outfits for that style youll have the most annoying people trying to tell you youre lying while acting superior as if they dont look so stupid to anyone who knows the first thing about the style.
something else ive been noticing over the past few years is that clothes have been getting less colourful with each passing year, theyre just visually boring to look at now that everything is black white and grey with maybe a small hint of colour here and there. it doesnt help that the shapes and silhouettes of the clothes are just boring now, because styles like goth that are centred around one colour are interesting because of the shapes and textures used in the outfits.

I totally agree with the part about few people actually wearing alt or even interesting fashion outside of online spaces like pleaseee I want to dress like that irl more and idk maybe just the internet has made alt fashion seem more common than it is but it feels more isolating than it should irl if that makes sense? Like it's "mainstream" but not normalized???
social media has definitely made alternative fashion seem more common. because alternative people interact with each other more and form their own communities, on curated sites like tiktok and instagram these interactions equal interest in this type of content which makes them suggest it more.

absolutely!!!! i think it also has to do with the death of subculture, everything is defined by an aesthetic now. older music+politic based subcultures (emo, goth, punk) are defined by the music and politics before the fashion, but people these days will say you're gatekeeping when you tell them they can't be goth without listening to goth music. the focus on aesthetics means people don't really find any identity within these looks, it's just clothes to them so they can easily switch between whatever aesthetic is most trending (like you said, microtrends are a huge part of this) so stuff is never made or worn with care, the purpose is to be trendy.
i also feel like theres a difference between styles and aesthetics. (and im saying styles for lack of a better term) styles are defined by basic fundamentals that can be very easily experimented with while still staying true to the style. aesthetics are defined by certain specific pieces/outfits that one must have to be considered part of the aesthetic rather than a set of rules, if you will, that can be translated in different ways. (i hope im making sense, sorry if not. i also think i might have gone on this little rant in the blog post but i cant remember, im too tired lmao)

I grew up with the internet. All my life, the internet has been part of my taste, opinion, knowledge and almost all of my personality.
The thing is, you will have 2 learn how 2 separe yourself from your internet persona.
Otherwise, it will pretty much consume you completely. The internet is a REALLY small part of the world.
Now, the internet is still a very new thing with a lot of new possibilities 2 discover. That's why people seem 2 not understand what it means 2 be active on social media.
The irresponsible use of digital tools results in this type of problems.
Tiktok, 4 example. Tiktok's design is made 2 be fast, quick, "cheap" and forgettable.
The time you spend on tiktok passes really quickly. Your consumption of content becomes easy 2 consume.
Tiktok is a snack. A really variated snack, with all sorts of flavours.
The first time u try it, it amazes u, and eventually, u seek more and more.
It doesn't really matter how much u consume, you'll always want more.
This, combined with fast-fashion buying apps, results in a cycle of unstoppable consumption.
Tiktok, Temu, Aliexpress, Shein, Instagram Pinterest are "SugarMedia", and it sickens our consumption habits.
This is genuinely such a refreshing observation and it's worded sooooo well

linking to your first point, it seems like the recent rise in popularity of the internet has definitely changed the landscape, and possibly for the worst. i first got access to the internet in around 2015 and mainly used youtube, while it wasnt very niche and tight knit anymore, the online community was often still seen as cringe by those outside it. even in 2015, there was almost a set of unspoken rules on using the internet, i definitely felt almost some kind of disconnect, it was clear that people had created online personas for themselves. now, as its gotten more popular, those seem to have been completely lost for good. a lot of people end up using the internet in a way that does more harm for them than good - they get too attatched to creators, they take everything as absolute fact etc. people have gotten way too comfortable on the internet to the point of over sharing and spilling their entire lives out for an audience to see and its only gonna hurt them in the long run.

I've been using YouTube since late 2012 and it feels like the website really started changing around 2017 (at least in terms of its userbase and its algorithms becoming more intrusive around then).
Funnily enough, 2017 was also the year they introduced their stupid new logo.

another consequence of the rize of social media iz the death of subculturez with a history and sense of community and their rebirth az aestheticz. since everything iz so superficial nowadayz, nobody haz any incentive 2 learn the most basic factz abt subculturez they claim 2 b part of
i feel like its not even just killed subcultures but regular styles too. these aesthetics we see today are so shallow compared to the styles we saw in the past, theres no room for creativity anymore which forces people to box themselves in smaller to fit in.

I find the decision to only dress up indoors and/or wear outfits once so weird. Coming from someone who's broke af, I guarantee you if I'm buying clothes I'm wearing it for life until I can't anymore. No matter how eccentric it looks. It'd be one thing if they grew out of the style, but to not even commit to the fashion? What's the point then? There's even an option to quickly resell things you've bought in Depop, a site I use frequently. Why not experiment, mix and match styles? Or dye, cut and sew it into something new?
making clothes is so fun, i love designing them and coming up with all of these cool ideas. though actually making them takes me a lot of effort, especially since i have to hand sew them. still fun though.

I feel very similar to you. With the death of subcultures I think we as a whole kind of lost the sense of creativity and uniqueness when it comes to fashion. Especially taking into consideration that now many trends do not last for more than 1 year. It can kind of leads to a feeling of exhaustion when trying to keep up with every trend which is why most people have just stopped trying to find themselves in Fashion and go with Fashion trends that are known to have longevity like chic fashion which can also be easily bought through brands as Zara and HandM.
i feel like a lot of people also forget that they dont have to follow trends if they dont want to. i see so many people complaining about certain things trending and them not liking them when they could easily just ignore it. i think that the trend cycle being this fast has 1 positive; it forces a lot of people to dress in a style that they actually like rather than just brainlessly following trends as they can no longer keep up with them.

Cheap clothes and addictive algorithms are like yin and yang. Microtrends are fast, they come by super fast, they're often shoved into little 15 second videos on tiktok too so that adds to the speediness of it all. It makes sense as to why brands that are of good quality literally cannot keep up with it, it used to take *months* to come up with designs that people would like. It would also take longer for said items to be manufactured because of their quality. So it makes complete sense as to why brands like shein and temu do so well. They send their hundreds of "designs" (their designs are often stolen from real designers or from tiktok/pinterest) to cheap manufacturers overseas, these cheap manufacturers will use lower quality materials. There has been lead found in temu products. Back to my original point, though, it's just much easier for brands like shein and temu to follow the pace of microtrends. It's so terrible.
It's also crazy how apathetic people have become to these practices. They'd rather have cheap clothing that lasts for like a month that was made by abused children than an expensive piece that'll last them DECADES and that was made ethically. The fast fashion industry is one of the major reasons I think teens need to get offline.
not to mention a lot of other brands use the same manufacturers as shein and temu, only changing small things about the clothes to be able to pass it off as their own creations.

with internet getting so huge and all everything gets washed down and people move on to the next "trend" way too quickly.
the thing about only having clothes to film tiktoks is so real. why even have that many clothes to not even wear them outside when they can be so fun and interesting! everyone keeps buying shit ton of stuff for them to "go out of trend" in like a week and never wear it again. who even cares what's trending. these people need to realise that if they wore the clothes "that isn't trending anymore" no one would give a shit irl!!
no literally. and the way a lot of these trends can be done by using the same clothes just wearing them differently. but the people who buy into all of these trends are too dumb to see that so they throw them out and buy new ones that look near identical. most of these trend seem to be the same pieces just made by different brands.

had to give this kudos yesterday, but I really wanted to blab about it cause this rant is so real. I used shein a while back, when I prob didn’t really know what I liked, but I mainly just thrift now. I’m going for mcbling style rn, which is honestly really hard 2 find for the most part, probably cause a lot of it is expensive, or someone else gets to it first. I went to urban outfitters yesterday and there was this y2k-ish t shirt for like 20 dollars, which maybe it’s good quality but it’s still a lot of a simple shirt. Besides me, my two best friends have a hippie-like style, and I have a goth friend (sometimes just grunge-ish but can definitely do goth too) but I don’t really know any other alt-ish people. I LOVE watching alt tiktok comps (props to Xx_Twt_xX for having really cool ones w many styles), & I’m on vacation rn, the first day I saw some rlly cool ppl but not really any other days I don’t think. Clothing is less colorful for sure, but with shitty minimalism trends and like no creativity, I guess that’s most things now. I really loved reading this rant though :))
Also an add on, weird thing I have, I feel like when I get things that go with my style (which isn’t common already) it feels like I need to build up on my wardrobe rather than just get so much at once? Most people probably feel something like that though.
if you havent already tried looking there, i would recommend second hand sites like vinted, especially if you have specific brands you know to look for. i think the easiest way is to just look for clothes that you could upcycle to fit your style more instead of specifically looking for clothes that fit your style as they are.

I feel like it’s not even JUST fashion anymore. I feel like everything has kinda just lost creativity. I look back on the 2000s, even 2010s, and see just how colorful and full of life they were. I swear after covid everything kinda just went downwards.
oh yeah definitely. ive already gone on other rants about those though so im not gonna retype all of that here. what i will say though is that music now seems so sanitized. its all this half-assed-sounding either house or 80s inspired songs that all sound the same. creativity seems to have died after lockdown.

The stupid minimalism trend that's been slowly plaguing and destroying our world has been going on for years even before COVID. I started noticing it around 2015 or so, and slowly but steadily, minimalism has been progressively wiping out all sense of fun and creativity. >:(
I also distinctly remember randomly thinking to myself on Saturday, 2/22/2020 ''why the hell do people these days want to live in these boring white houses with plain white furniture?'' (based on what I had noticed online and in television commercials) as my mother and I were walking down to a pizzeria that afternoon.

This Post Is So Perfect Omg !!!! I HATE -Core Aesthetics N MicroTrends In General , It Has Watered Down The Meaning Of Subcultures All Together . . . .·°՞(≧□≦)p՞°·.
they dont even just water down subcultures but fashion as a whole. instead of just experimenting with fashion and taking inspiration from different things to create your personal style, it feels like you HAVE to box yourself into one of a list of severely watered down styles. theres no creativity or individuality anymore, a majority of these tiktok fashion people look the same because of this. and because the fashion influencers all look the same, so do those who look to them for inspiration. this is exactly why i hate the fashion community on tiktok; theyre either pretentious fashion nerds who think they know it all because they own a pair of tabis and a zara leather jacket or theyre people who think the only valid styles are scene, mcbling, y2k,goth, emo, punk, 'shoujo girl' and maybe a severely watered down version of gyaru.

To be honest? I 100% agree with you

I don't shop at Temu or Shein, and I have sworn to never ever do so, because no matter how beautiful the dress or clothing might look like online, I know it will never, or hardly, live up to that, and even if it does, it'll be cheap and will probably break if I zip it up at the wrong angle. I'd rather have a more limited wardrobe with better quality clothes than a bunch of different, but flimsy clothes.
As for the micro trends, although I haven't come across any, I can imagine what it's like, especially in a world now where you can access an insane amount of media upon a click of your phone.
With the whole 'aesthetic' thing, I think it's been ruined. I think it's great to have so many different styles, but at this point its ridiculous. Like what do you mean I'm not a real Fairy Grunge Clean Decora Kei girl? Im just throwing on whatever? And yeah, it is limited to about 4 outfits, and it's frustrating, because maybe I don't own those pieces that you expect me to wear, or maybe i dont like it or it dosen't fit, but it doesn't make someone a poser. Heck, maybe they're just wearing items that they like, and they're not trying to dress in a niche little subgenre that 11 people have heard of. But here we are.
And now for the point I resonate with the most: how people dress in public. Because I know for a fact, that if j owned a wardrobe of 50's swing dresses, romantic/vampire goth dresses, Lolita inspired dressed, and everything in between, I would absolutely wear them out in public. Because why shouldn't I?
It's so frustrating, especially when you open Pinterest, for example and you see all of these stunning outfits, and then you walk outside and everyone's wearing Nike Pro shorts up their asses and Hoodrich or White Fox hoodies over their beige or black crop tops.
I for one, cannot stand beige, brown or gray. I can stand white and black, but if the item of clothing is boring, I'm not wearing it. Same with orange, but more so because not many things actually go well with orange...
But anyway, it's the same with makeup and hair too. I find it so sad, that, somewhere along the line, all of these girls have been brainwashed, in a way, into thinking that this is the way to dress, that you should wear foundation so dark on your face it looks orange, and have your hair bleached and straight with a middle part, and that anyone else who doesn't do this is weird. This is also scary though, because I easily could've ended up as one of those people, but thank forces almighty that I did not. Because to me, how you present yourself can tell me a lot about you as a person
And not in a stereotypical way, but more so in a way that's like... You express yourself through your clothes, or through your makeup. And I don't know how to put it in words but that makes me feel better about a person, that I know that they have a strong enough sense of self to not do whatever everyone else does, just because.
Okay I did NOT intend to write that much- sorry for that!

thats so true omg, personally im trying to dress scene but well my parents say thats its ridiculous, that i look like a clown etc so im not really allowed to wear this outside... i do sometimes but my outfits arent that cool... also some ppl dont have enough confidence to dress how they would like to, like i know so many alt friends who doesnt dress like that outside because theyre scared. I think ppl started to judge so much while clothes are unique and creative and we should respect every style ! like why would yall judge ppl while they express themselves just because not many ppl dress like that, precisely theyre so cool and creative !! i will never understand that new mentality sadly. Why theres not many alternaties stores, why every clothes look the same, why everyone is just a copy of everyone ????
its honestly so sad that people care so much about how others dress, it sucks that your parents dont let you dress how you want because they dont understand it, but thats just how it goes i guess. i hope that more people who want to dress alternatively actually get round to it as its such a confidence booster. lifes too short to dress for other people so as to not be judged.
ive also noticed how most of the time people in real life dont care about this kind of thing as much as people online - sure some people do, but there have always been judgmental people since the dawn of time and there will continue to be, but life is much more fun when you stop caring, though that can be quite hard to do.

Fashion seems to have really homogenized in the past decade or so based on my observations and research. I blame the rise of modern social media and its algorithms for this and the fact that most people outside of SpaceHey seem to have the same hivemind opinions on fashion and pretty much only like what's currently considered ''in''.
The 2000s were truly the last, yet most, creative and fun decade for fashion. People weren't afraid to experiment with their looks and add on layers (such as the iconic layered tank top look) as desired compared to people nowadays who have these boring minimalist wardrobes and styles. This was supposed to be what fashion would look like in the new millennium until the unfortunate rise of smartphones and modern social media as we know it in the 2010s came in to ruin it all.
I was never really fond of 2010s ''fashion'' even as a kid/very young teen during that decade and now I finally know why. And the fact that fashion is homogenizing itself even further doesn't really surprise me at this point.
i feel like people also forget that they dont have to wear everything as they buy it, a lot of people seem to feel like they cant get into other fashion styles because they cant find the right pieces for it.
also i think the early 2010s had some cool stuff going, it was just everything after 2014 that started going downhill.

This is why i mainly thrift clothes or buy them from regular vintage stores (not the fancy overpriced ones)
If you thrift clothes its cheaper, vintage clothes are just such better quality and fit much better
I mainly aim for vintage with things such as jeans or jumpers because they look much nicer in my opinion and they last a few years instead of a few months.
My mum is in some kind of community that passes around second hand clothing bags, you can grab what you want and throw away your old stuff in it and usually theres always some cheap shirt or some shorts in there that i snatch out of it.
About the styles it is really difficult, you can style whatever you want and wear most things but thats expensive as fuck as most stores only sell fast fashion with the most blank or simple minimalist designs. I kind of gave up on that just to pass as a boy (im trans) which i really hate but i mean its okay
Also bro all the main clothing stores are fast fashion, if you want the workers to be payed you need to be willing to spend 70 euros on a T-shirt
the new clothes never seem to last anymore. like i have to by underwear from them and theey barely last a few months before the seams start detatching. its honestly such a pisstake. i remember when i was younger, the clothes i would buy would last me years. and that was while i was a kid, constantly running around and falling over. i feel like they make clothes bad on purpose nowadays so you have to buy more.
by chiyuuusss; ; Report
They don’t really do it on purpose so you have to buy more but more so they can make them cheaper, in and before the 2000s clothes were more expensive but you could wear the item multiple times a week for YEARS. Now almost every clothing store is fast fashion so all clothes are cheaper and its way cheaper for the big brands to make them too, use a bit of elastics in jeans just so it could fit another few people and we don’t even need plus sizes!! Even though those elastics will snap after a few washes and 2 months later theres a hole in it already.
I have a 4 year old brother and he’s litterally tearing trough jeans and trousers because well, he’s a kid and runs and falls. My mum has to throw away like one or two pairs A WEEK and buy new ones because the quality is that crap

Yeah some people would BUT, it gives the big companies a little less money and trends, more then half of the people that buy new clothing would chuck em out anyways after a few months because everyone is suddenly wearing sleeveless crop tops or something and they’ve got to have it in all the colours of the rainbow. There are brands out there with better quality though their not really well known and usually quite expensive, sorry i can’t give any examples but if you search for a specific clothing thing you could probably find some small business that sells it for really good quality although it’d be quite expensive and from my experience the shipping is always like 50 euros extra (Im from west europe so yeahh)
