Hey SpaceSleepers (37): The One about Funny Book

After picking up my name change papers yesterday, I went with my mother to my favorite bookstore, Yu & Me Books (one I have mentioned before) on Mulberry Street since it was a ten minute walk from the NY Civil Court. When I was looking over the books they had, I found an Osamu Dazai book I had not yet owned, Self Portraits, which I later found out was translated and released this Spring in the US by New Directions. Next to it, I found a book with a plot I must have manifested into my life with the desire of it last year, Notes to A Crocodile by Qiu Miaojin. I say that bit on manifestation as I purchased a book with a similar cover color scheme and mistook the plot to be about a queer woman navigating life in a society that outcasts her for her relationship, which is shared by Notes to A Crocodile more. I wish not to mention the title since I wish not to deter people from reading it just because of my disappointment born of misconception.

Actually, I was looking around when I came across what seemed to be the last copy of A Quitter's Paradise by Elysha Chang, which I was interested in purchasing since the little bookstore review mentioned that it was good for people who liked Disorientation by Elaine Hsieh Chou, which I enjoyed last May. Disorientation was a very rudimentary satire but I did enjoy it a lot, especially since it wasn't afraid of critiquing the protagonist for being complacent in a system that victimizes her too. I was struck with how I couldn't actually bring myself to buy it, as it would deprive the next person from doing so. Thankfully, I actually was perusing my bookshelf today and realized that I had forgotten that I received the Advanced Reader's Copy last year (07/13/2024).
