anyone else feel like most mainstream media is completely devoid of passion nowadays?? ive felt this way for a while and i couldnt quite place it until recently. and i know this is such a non issue but it still upsets me. everything from movies to music online content on sites like youtube even; it all feels like a cash grab. it almost upsets me too, it feels almost as though we were robbed because billion dollar corporations dont even have the decency to try and hide their greed from us, the consumer. these companies give us the absolute bare minimum and we sit there idly and let them. everything feels recycled, like its all been done before in the exact same way down to the fine details. what makes it feel worse is the fact that few other peole seem to notice this, and when they do they almost dont seem to understand it fully and the role they play in this. like people complain all the time about the disney live action remakes and how unoriginal they are and how its very obviously just a cash grab but then they turn around and watch them in cinema and on disney plus when they release and its like?? werent you just complaining about how you hate this, so why are you watching it and giving them the money to continue with this, stop being part of the problem.
and dont even get me started on the ads/ product placements...

It always was to me, all the passion projects are indie and always will. its just a different cash grab now, most of the classic people loved today was hated during its time.
atleast before there was some kind of effort put into the cash grabs as they still had to engage an audience to be able to grab cash. that doesnt seem to be the case anymore as all they really need to do now is just make more sequels, remakes and spin offs of popular movies, all the work had already been done

That I can agree with its just harder now to hold peoples attention now

'do you like your media to have personality and be made with passion? TOO BAD!!!'

yes, everything does feel boring. as someone who really loves tv, my biggest pet peeve is REBOOTS and LONG-RUNNING SHOWS. I hate the "cycles of nostalgia". I don't watch cable tv or listen to the radio because both of these always repeat the same things (for the radio, i mean in music genres). i search for new things online, like webseries and underrated music. and i end up finding really cool creative projects. "Eventually within the next quarter of a century, the nostalgia cycles will be so close together that people will not be able to take a step without being nostalgic for the one they just took. At that point, everything stops. Death by Nostalgia." -Frank Zappa in 1988
i know i am getting off track, but cycles of nostalgia really annoys me. not only in commercials, reboots, music sampling, music repeating scenes of the 70s/80s, even teens feeling nostalgia for how the internet was 5 years ago. soulless coporate wastelands are bad enough, but the rose-tinted glasses and lack of effort to look forward and make something new is annoying. people like familiarity too much. this is why there are so many movies in a movie franchise now. because movie executives prefer familiarity and cash over groundbreaking and original but no money. bye
its really sad to see corporate greed killing art. also that little side tangent on nostalgia cycles was quite interesting as that was something ive never really heard of before.

cleo!!
i feel like this also applies to music (mainly pop music). everyone sounds boring and like the same industry plant. whenever my mom listens to taylor swift i feel like ALL her songs sound the absolute same!!
mainstream radio hits mainly only focus on being catchy, accessible, and relatable. but passion is not seen as something that is needed (not all mainstream music.)

yes! i also feel like some of these artists try and have a distinct memorable style but they just end up having each of their songs sound the same instead.

one of the problems i have with current, well, everything is how corporate everything is. everything any anything that can be used to make money will be used to make money and taken over by big companies and corporations, think how much youtube changed since the 2010s, or most social media sites in general
anything artsy or creative is so difficult to make now, because theres no money in creativity anymore for corporations, it sucks ass seeing every cartoon, movie etc get cancelled immediately without being given a chance to even shine
i also hate how everything is now digital, we spend money on things we cant even own physically, and risk losing them even if we paid for it, as well as everything being able to just be wiped off the face of the earth and permanently become lost media :(

SO TRUE... If I see one more lifeless remake or spinoff:(

No literally i 100% agree. I feel like everything just lacks emotion. A good example is like Monster High. I loved it so much as a kid because it had this grit to it, it leaned more into the “monster” end of it, and had such a unique style. Now the outfits feel like that try hard trendy style, and there’s not really much depth to the characters. Same goes for a lot of horror too
a lot of horror now seems to be just jumpscares and shock value, no depth to any character, no character development, barely even a storyline - just straight shock value.

i like the phrase "cycles of nostalgia". every time i see something new that regurgitates a pre-existing media i like to say that.

every new movie I see is the same, nothing more than mediocre or a copy of old ideas. but the majority of movies made now are just sequels, triologies, etc. and spinoffs of past successful movies, yet it destroys the magic of the original with how far it strays from it and how many they make just as a cash grab.
yeah... none of them catch my attention nowadays. ive literally only watched 1 new movie that just came out in the past 3 or 4 years and even then i didnt choose it my friends did.

(why is this the second blog i’ve seen of you today your so real)
Yes i agree bro, Recently i went to the movies and all the movie posters were the same. The new marvel movies i’ve have seen all look the same. Netflix cancels its most loved shows just to get a 500 trilion euro budget on one season of stranger things. Go on YouTube and you will see the same thumbnails over and over with the face and the big red letters with something something.
I don’t think creativity is dying in mainstream media, i actually think its going the good way right now with Indie movies and games being watched more and played more then ever before. The whole superhero movie thing is slowly but surely drying out. The rise of A24 and the accessibilities to make content (Everyone could make their own movie using just a phone and a free editing software and put it on youtube) Those new into and across the spider verse movies were the most creatively pleasing animation movies i’ve ever seen.
However beyond the movie and game industry its not going too well, self expression in fashion is hard in 2024 if your not a millionaire. Things are getting minimalist (for example the new Pringle's logo). I don’t know how it is with books as i just read them and i’m not a total geek about them but i mean the ao3 fanfiction is… rather creative to say the least.
about books, i dont really read books often but when i go into the bookstore and look at them, the covers all have this same ugly style that immediately puts me off. ive also heard a couple other people talking about how a lot of books now feel like theyre written to go viral on booktok, with unnecessary sex scenes, taboo topics being thrown in for the sake of it and ran through tropes that romanticise things that shouldnt be. it also seems that a lot of horror books now are just straight shock horror with no depth whatsoever.

Yeah yeah i do get that, i kind of have the same thing too when i walk into my local bookshop. Mainly its only in the YA section though (which is weird cuz its basically porn that they advertise to teens)
by ✮⋆˙ Greyson/Bowie ✮⋆˙; ; Report
ive honestly given up in all the other sections and just head straight for the manga section when i go in there, nothing in them catches my eye anymore.
by chiyuuusss; ; Report
i’ve never even seen a manga section in a bookstore lol. I honestly just order books online because most books i want to read are really hard to find in bookstores in my country plus i prefer to read in english rather then my native language

i dont know if its a more general thing but i know my local one has had one for quite a while now as i remember going there at like 10 years old, when i was still deep in my sailor moon obsession.

Thats why i love ao3, none of those writers are only doing it for the money, just out of pure motivation and love

I honestly believe this is why I’m so passionate in getting a job in the creative industry. I want to change things but as u said it’s also such a small problem, sometimes I feel like I’d rather do something that could actually help people in some way but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t pursue my dream career. I can still donate and do volunteer work from time to time.
In a way I do believe that with enough demand for stuff like this we could get it back, I know young people are passionate about it so if we try hard enough then maybe we could bring creativity back but with the rise of AI and stuff we also have other problems to deal with
yeah i get you. but hopefully with the rise in popularity of things like analogue horror and social media making content creation more accessible it will open up a gateway for smaller indie film makers and their passion projects to get themselves out there more.

oh yes social media definitely plays a big role on influence and I think it’s going to be more evident in the next few years, heck it’s happening rn
