Hence The Hiatus Has Halted...
SO, after decorating my Spacehey profile and then allowing it to sit and rot for a few months, I'm back and ready to share a moment 3 years in the making...
This blog was originally going to be a quick show and tell about this little figure I got recently but after getting started on what was supposed to be a quick write up I just kept going and going until I just decided to upscale the scope of the whole post
Here are my some of my thoughts on one of my favorite anime
Which of course is Nichijou (also referred to as "Nichijou - My Ordinary Life" by those who like moving their mouths)
How I See Nichijou
What can be said about this anime that hasn't been said already. It tries to be everything I could want from a show, it's ADHD incarnate!
At times sausage to the locker-lined wall absurd, to Zen and borderline philosophical in a manner that comes almost as unexpectedly as the rest of the chaos. It's relatable, charming, silly, hilarious, heartwarming, and admittedly at times just down right confusing to someone like me who is primarily accustomed to western culture. All beautifully tied together by some truly A+, S-tier, premium animation and a truly prestigious OST of sweet orchestral music. It seems very fitting to describe this show as the equivalent of a luscious, mellifluous string ensemble playing one of the most erratic, almost incoherent melodies in a way only true professionals can pull off, leaving those witness to it captivated and satisfied, because it somehow works
Well, at least I think so. It's been said that Nichijou tends to be hit or miss among audiences, it could be due to moments where the humor relies heavily on preexisting knowledge of Japanese culture (I've had to Google some context for certain jokes) which could be confusing. There are also moments where subtle jokes get set up in one scene without a punchline, only to be payed off way later in the episode when you might have already forgotten what the original joke was and are now just confused as to why what happened just happened, to the point where the original purpose of the joke becomes meta, because the fact it was set up so weird and confused you is the joke. It's the the kind of thing that went over my head and I didn't fully appreciate until I rewatched the series. If anything else, there's just so much randomness that it might get overwhelming
I'll admit, I didn't get Nichijou at first and I actually had to make myself try to start the series 4 different times before actually going through with finishing it. I was confused about why in the very first minutes of the very first episode I was bearing witness to a girl with a comically large wind up key sticking out her back, go and chase after a random cat that stole a fish she was cooking in her yard, only to start daydreaming about the cat's family which then causes her to crash into a random dude which then causes a rather impressive looking explosion to wipe out half the town she's in, except the town is fine and so is she, but now she's stuck on a random rooftop missing her arm because oh, she's an android, and that's just the kind of thing that happens in this show
If that sounded confusing that's because it is but only because you're trying to make sense of it, and that isn't the point, which is just the kind of thing Nichijou likes to remind you of, that not everything can or has to make sense, sometimes things just happen and just are, and sometimes it's good to just accept that and maybe even appreciate it for what it is. I don't know why Nichijou starts that way, why I saw those things happen the way it did, but once I accepted it and just went with it, I realized that whether or not is made sense, it's happening, and it can be fun to go along for the ride. It's just one of the moments that makes Nichijou, Nichijou. And sometimes when this show is able to catch you with one of it's moments, whether comically relatable or sweetly thoughtful, it will really resonate and you just can't help but feel appreciation for the comfort and joy it brings. Coupled with the animation, music, and heart, it's all just so competent
Yes, I really like Nichijou, which brings me to the other topic of this post
The Coveted Nichijou Figure
For about 3 years now I have been trying to get one specific Nichijou figure, the elusive Toy Works Collection 4.5 Nichijou Aioi Yuuko figure. After losing an auction on eBay offering her as part of a set (which sold for $90 btw), I scrolled and scrolled all throughout the world wide interconnected network from eBay to Mercari, reached out to My Figure Collection users claiming to own her (with no response btw), Buyee, defunct japanese websites or sites with forever OUT OF STOCK statuses for her. But then finally, FINALLY after years of hoping and coping, I saw her
On my Mercari saved searches (yes I set up a saved search called Nichijou Figures) there was a new listing for a set of 3 figures, and after a hasty DM, struck a deal to get her separately for $36
I mean it came out to $48.60 (Mercari fees be damned) but I wasn't letting her slip by again. And almost a week later this arrived
Encased within the little teal envelope is the greatest goofy girl. Time to free her!
And there she is! She was a little dusty at first but it was nothing that a little dawn and cotton swabs couldn't take care of. I was so happy with the condition she was in and that I was able to get her for a relatively low price (trust me these can get silly pricey). I'm pretty sure her pose is based on this scene from the OP
With that she goes on the shelf, presented proudly with her friends. Selamat Pagi indeed. I love this line of figures! They feel so solid and detailed while being round and oh so expressive. They capture the cuteness of the art style perfectly and for me, this is the cream of the crop when it comes to Nichijou figures. It's so choice
And that's that!
I have plans for another post to showcase my other Nichijou figures along with some exclusive Keiichi Arawi (creator of Nichijou) Japanese gacha figures! Along with other cute stuff from Miku to Hello Kitty. If that's something you'd like to see, please stay tuned!
If you made it to the end of all my rambling, I truly thank you! You either have a good amount of patience or are also Nichijou fan lol. Either way I appreciate the time you gave to my post
Until next time!
(see you again)
