ik the category is ironic but i couldnt find anything else and music is still importnant. also english isnt my first language so apologies in advance if i made spelling mistakes
Recently I've been seeing the claim that "Its all about the music" often and while the music works as a general rule of thumb to, i guess, weed out posers, when the topic is about subcultures that emerged from punk (goth, emo etc) the music loses its use as a way of seeing if someone is a poser or not. Someone can listen to Misfits and be a poser because punk (and other subcultures that emerged from punk) arent just about the music. they are ideologies, political opinions and lifestyles. I dont care how much punk rock or gothic rock or alternative music you listen too, if your opinions and lifestyle contradicts the subculture then you are not apart of it. Imagine a sexist riot grrrl? doesnt make sense does it? why should we not have the same energy towards subcultures like punk
and while these ideologies might develop over time they shouldnt not just be scrapped of their core ideas.
this of course mostly only applies to more extreme cases, there are many ways of being alt, many different "flavors" of punk/goth/emo ideologies.
and this isnt a shade towards people with different political ideologies, believe what you want, you have the right to, regardless of my opinion on it. but dont come to specifically left leaning spaces and then try to twist the meaning of these spaces.
you might notice that im mentioning politics often, that because punk and whatnot are inherently political.
now this isnt to say that music isnt an importnant part of these subcultures but my point is its not the only part of them
subcultures like punk arent just about the music, if they were then we would be taking the culture out of the subculture. whats left then? sub. like submissive. good job. now its yaoi.
also ps: I am a person with developing views and opinions and have the right to change them when i acquire new information
with that being said if you have any opinions on this topic make sure to express them in a civil manner
