As always, I have to start this entry with a disclaimer that I am not a music critic nor am I like The Asian Ever or something, so my opinion isn't the be all end all for the quality of this album. I think Putumayo at its best has a selections of songs that mesh together well and shows the country/continent that the album attempts to represent. At worst, their albums can be underwhelming or unrepresentative of the genre but still introduce you to some of the regions' artists. That being said I thought that this album was sufficiently alright for what it was trying to do but it does fall into the latter category and I could see someone saying it is kind of 'mid.' I listened to it and the song choice mesh really well but the issue is that they can be somewhat forgettable sadly. Perhaps its from trying to represent a continent that doesn't even remotely speak the same language within countries even nearby and with such a diverse cultures ranging from all four cardinal direction, flattening them for this CD just leads to dissatisfaction. Not to mention, this is one of the lower rated albums all together along with the previously discussed Asian Groove album for the lack of exploration it provides into culture. I still think the individual artists are very good but I don't think this uses their best work and it feels like the CD itself is very surface level. It doesn't try to explore the cultures it is representing as much as it could. Especially in comparison to previous albums I have listened to that were all so deeply impactful, this one left more to be desired. The songs aren't as diverse in comparison to ones like Putumayo Brasileiro, which only encompassed one country. Maybe that's a lot to ask for from Putumayo on a Lounge album specifically, but it does disappoint and I would have to give it 3 to 3.5 stars out of 5 since I liked it but it could definitely be better (07/09/2024). — Mars ᓚᘏᗢ |
