It gives off the same energy as thinking you have a terminal disease because google told you so after you looked up a simple headache. Especially with mental issues, self diagnosis leaves room for the person to be less open to improvement and more open to creating excuses for themselves. Since they don't have an actual diagnosis, they don't know how to deal with it and focus on it so much that it consumes them and causes malfunction (most of the time they are completely fine). Plus many symptoms of most of the disorders that are easy for the average person to access are somewhat cannon and can be related to by anyone. TikTok creators also milk the hell out of this thinking they are raising awareness while they are calling the most simple thing an ADHD symptom for example. I do mind self diagnosers because they cause people to have less and less concern, respect and empathy for those who actually have a diagnosis.
Of course, getting a diagnosis is hard in terms of both being able to reach a therapist and the process of the diagnosis itself. My comment was mostly focused on those who overthink it and be sure with only a few sources and make it their whole thing. If there are serious suspicions, you should try your best to reach out to a professional before it further effects your life quality. Late or early, I am glad you could get a diagnosis and hope you are doing well ♡
i somewhat self diagnosed, like was 99% sure i had ADHD but didnt tell anyone i DEFINITELY did, then i went to the psychiatrist and it turns out i have ULTRA ADHD. but if you have reasonable suspicion you should go to a professional and get diagnosed 4 sure
over a couple years n lots of studying i was pretty sure i had depression, ptsd, adhd, and bpd - but i didnt ever say that i had it because i wanted to be diagnosed professionally - glad to have had that opportunity (indeed turned out as mentally ill as i thought xD)
As a person who has been diagnosed by a specialist i do not recoment self diagnosing. If you ever ask yourself " am i (example) autistic? " make sure to get diagnosed by a professional rather than making a quiz online.
I think it is always better to be diagnosed by an actual professional - everyone should take care of themselves as needed but they shouldn't label themselves like that xO!
diagnosis is a privilege, some disorders criteria is based off of men and their behaviours (most commonly autism and adhd) i believe that self diagnosis all depends on age on how legit u can take a person, the disorder and how much research they have put into it... but then there is cases of self diagnosis like for example DID which i believe is wayy too complex of a disorder to diagnose urself.. i also think minors should not self diagnose themselves w a cluster b disorder as the placebo affect is very real and unfortunately disorders like bpd has somehow became desirable x(
Honestly I dont think its even just bpd - i think as of lately people really want something to be wrong with them - idk if its just for the lore or what.. -w-"
