"mental health is not an excuse for shtty behaviour!"

How is it that "mental health is not an excuse for shtty behaviour!" is a popular opinion... until someone with mh problems is a shtty person?? Or displays shtty behaviour? Mh is a reason, but not an excuse.

FUN FACT:

You can have mh problems AND be a bad person at the same time!

Lets talk about it!!

Having mh problems does not MAKE you a bad person; however, it also doesnt make you an INNOCENT person either!! As someone with pretty bad mh problems, I admit that I've done some REALLY crappy things... but I've listened to my friends and families criticisms and tried to improve as much as I can. It's all about IMPROVEMENT.

You can not manipulate people, abuse people, threaten people, etc. and then say "oh but i have -insert disorder/mh problem-". This goes for other people who defend these people too! "oh but they have a bad home life!" "but they have x,y,z- they didn't understand what they were doing" Then tell them?? Tell them and help them improve, don't say they didn't understand and then leave it at that.

Doing this -completely disregarding that it needs to stop and excusing it- will not help anyone!! it will not help the person who's struggling, nor the people that THEY have hurt.

That being said:

1. Take accountability and improve on your behaviour if someone tells you it has harmed people.

2. If someone is manipulative/abusive/just generally a crappy person to you.. call it out, tell someone, cut that person off if needed.

3. If someone tells you that someone is a shitty person -but also happens to have bad mh- keep it in mind, but don't disregard whoever came to you for help.

OMG, thank you very much for saying it. I had a classmate of mine who was justified in everything he did with his disorders, when he literally did things like threaten to kill us and hit us. And once I was fed up, I was complaining to the teacher about his behavior, a classmate of mine who was next to me just said "Don't you see that he's crazy?" referring to his mental disorder and demeaning his behavior.

like you can fuck up cuz of your mh and not truly mean it but you still fucked up and that effects the people around you. no matter how much you didn't mean something it doesn't change the fact that your actions have consequences that you are in charge of handling.
