Just watched Peter Weir's 1975 film adaptation of Joan Lindsay's "Picnic at Hanging Rock" and I got very mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, it was beautifully made, with a lot of whimsical and breathtaking shots and a beautiful musical score. But on the other hand, I could not resist and compare it with the book, which I read not so long time ago. I understand that it's very hard to adapt everything 100% accurately to the source material, it's two very different mediums with their own quirks and nuances, and I really do appreciate it, but still, I thought that book did much better job at showing this contrast between monotonous life at college and eerie happenings at the rock, and how it affects one another and people around it. Thought, I'll admit that maybe I had high expectations for the movie. Would love to rewatch it again one day, with fresher look (and in better quality).
