Gyaru, which is also the Japanese word for gal, started out as a way to rebel against japan's beauty standards for young women. The early look consisted of skin, heavy makeup, and more revealing outfits.
A big part of being Gyaru was the rebellious attitude. These girls were not afraid of being loud n' proud, always sticking out from the norm. Gals have a confident mindset, never caring about what people think about them.
Over time, gyarus developed their own culture. They created their own slang, something called a 'gyaru circle,' etc.
Gyarus marked their territory in Shibuya. The Shibuya 109 is a shopping mall that's been around since the 1970's and has since became a mecca for gyaru brands.
Fortunately for the young men who may be interested in gyaru, there's something called gyaruo, which is the male equivalent to gyaru.
Thank you for reading! I had a ton of fun learning about gyaru. For a more in depth look into gyaru, check out Hime Hime star's video on the history of gal.
