Literally going mental

Is there an almost pointlessness to social media? It supposedly connects us - which i guess it does - we see cool piccys of our friends and post our own lil piccys, it’s its own little art form and means of expression in and of itself. But is the connection we receive from social media authentic or merely a tit for tat sorta deal? I will give you attention if you give me attention,, and as the attention from one side wanes so does the other. It’s like a surface level connection with a bunch of people; you know what they’re upto, new tats they got, fit pics, sunrise and sunset photos… it’s cute keeping little tabs on people you used to know, but I think I’d much rather them share their random inner musings or info dumps bout a beautiful experience they had.

Though I have irl friends for that, and I think I only have the capability of maintaining a few very close friendships where we share the deep thoughts, and question things intently. I think via social media we are limited in this way. Or at least I am. To share a random thought to people I know but dont KNOW anymore would be horrific.

Not even just that, the aimlessly watching all these people - whose lives I don’t know Jack about and have nothing to do with- on TikTok is for some reason so so addicting. I like to consume media that expresses something, or teaches me something, makes me feel something even, but I somehow get caught in the scroll of this useless brain rot which I’d rather look at than do something that’s substantial and counts as actually living.

Being so abundantly connected to everyone and everything has its perks but we are ultimately more disconnected than ever?
