A classmate approached me after my midterm this semester to just get to know each other. He had asked me a lot of questions, some on my autism but the most interesting of which, if I played video games, to which I had responded that I do indeed play video games. I mentioned that I particularly liked games like Hollow Knight and Dead Cells. When he didn’t seem to know those, I brought up that I additionally play Guilty Gear Strive, Left 4 Dead 2, most of the old Street Fighter games, and that my friends have gotten me to play Overwatch. Nonetheless, I received a very dull look of confusion from him and thus heard him slip in the line, “Do you think that you playing games like that, while I play games like Fortnite and CoD because you’re a girl and I’m a guy?” I do have to admit that hearing that did feel strange, not just because it was odd as a transmasculine person (I'm man-adjacent but not a man) but because it was odd to hear someone say something so gender essentialist yet so extremely unlike the rest of the gender essentialist things I have heard. He likened playing shooters to being a man, however he lacks the understanding that games I had mentioned were ones that I selected for being overwhelmingly played by guys as to include him. I think it was interesting that as a defense of his masculinity, he chose to claim that the games I played were girl games simply because he had not played them himself. It’s a very attempt that I see often used to blanket any inferiority but I do find it very fascinating to say the least (07/02/2024). — Mars ᓚᘏᗢ |
