Preface
SpaceHey is another foray into my experience with the world of alternative social networks. Y'know, away from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, uh... Flickr? It really is no secret that the Web is kinda going to s**t. Even before the realm of AI captured the attention of everyone on every platform ever, there were many other reasons why people left the big few.
Why leave?
Before the advent of essentially the prequel to the Matrix, many were already leaving to other platforms, such as the fediverse, a connection of individual platforms that can interface with each other, most notably, Mastodon.
The buyout of Twitter is obviously a very easy event to point to when you hear about migrating to other platforms. As we can see, it's quite easy to see that many weren't overly cautious about what Musk would do to the website, even the company as a whole. Many went to the fediverse (that's one of me!), some went to equally corporate social media platforms such as Threads, some ventured into the depths of cohost, many more went deeper into Tumblr, and of course, some went here.
The fiasco of AI has really made sharing any type of media such as drawings, photography, and just general art demotivating. Just having to watch the bastion that is a corporation feeding your human work into a machine filled with overtrained RLHF models.
Where to?
Fedi
Ah, the fediverse, where explaining the concept is too long and so people just call it Mastodon half the time. The fediverse really has flourished since the incident of Musk and it still remains a growing community. I won't mention the server I stayed in as I'd rather not bombard them with the little userbase I have (spoiler alert, it's none anyway).
Fedi is definitely the coziest of the bunch, helped by the fact it's the one I've really used the most. The problem sometimes is that it's too cozy. You might take for granted the thrill of seeing viral Tweets pop up on your timeline, yes even you reading this, who signed up on SpaceHey for "making much more real connections with people", you probably miss it somewhat on the slow nature of this platform. And I don't blame you at all. We really do take for granted the fast-paced nature of the modern internet, wanting something new to happen in the downtime we're on our phones.
The fediverse centers around servers serving central purposes and is really good if you want a Reddit-esque like central community (though of course, many servers serve as general-purpose).
The others
Personally, my main gripe is the fact that you're not gonna get all your friends to switch with you on these platforms. Of course, if you're closer to each other, you'll have contact on a platform that isn't a raging dumpster fire, but if not, you're gonna really have to bet on them switch on their own accord if you can't bring them to.
Otherwise, I really don't have experience with these. I've been to Tumblr, though I hardly call it an alternative social media, save for the fact that people stuck in 2016 will make of you for it, counter-culture I guess.
So... SpaceHey.
As repeated in my introduction, SpaceHey is my latest foray into alternative social medias. And... it really does deliver on the old-school MySpace ideals. Huge amounts of personal customization, a simpler algorithm for finding new people, and the simplicity of having a profile and posting. A problem I see? Well, novelty.
SpaceHey is built on a lot of novelty, honestly too much for it to be a stable base for a network of new friends. People love Y2K, either for the community aspect, the aesthetics, uh... something else? And so they'll flock to SpaceHey as a revival for the community they miss or had missed. Novelty wears off and the unfortunate truth is people leave, even more unfortunate is when your friends leave, and neither of you have a fallback contact.
I wish to be wrong about SpaceHey but seeing the context that surrounds everything here, it's not an ignorant inference to make.
Closing
Well, that's a bit of my experience into these types of platforms, if you want to engage in the comments, feel free! I really would appreciate it. I just wanted to throw something out on here as an introduction. That's all, and uh... don't be stupid. ☆
