Wrangling the Beast that is Social Media

I think we can all agree that social media isn't what it used to be. The internet as a whole has been molded and added to since its creation. From websites to blogs, from blackberries to iPhones. The web and the technology you access it on have changed dramatically. i remember back in the yonder year of 2012 (when somethingawful reigned supreme and two years before fnaf changed the culture of YouTube forever), the internet was entirely different. Sponsorships were few and far between, they had really only taken off two years prior. Ads were in place, but not nearly as invasive as the 4+ unskippable ads those of us too broke for the YouTube Premium experience.

SOOO I've decided to engage with social media differently. The fun thing about sites like this is the lack of monetary inclination. No sponsored posts after three scrolls. No continual dopamine rushes. Just posting, interacting, and lurking. I know there's no way to resurrect MySpace, no way to time travel to the beginning of Facebook or Reddit, but what I do have the ability to do is give my time to long-form or forum-based content. Content that's made by fellow users for their community, not made by influencers who buy cheap stuff off of TikTok Shop and beg us to buy it all to line their own pockets. I want to regain the sense of community that places like SpaceHey offer.

Are there any other sites like Spacehey y'all would recommend? Any ideas on how to stave off short-form content? I'm curious to see what other people have to say :)

The internet in general went from being a place to chat, learn, and enjoy to a never ending sea of advertisements, engagement bots, and rage bait - oh how the mighty have fallen

for real, i really think it's lost its soul once people figured out you could squeeze money out of it :(( but that's why I really appreciate Spacehey and stuff, it's way more focused on organic interaction. Cool pfp, by the way!!
