music tracking apps have ruined music

them apps/websites have took the fun out of listening to music, it's become less about a genuine passion for music nd more about making it a competition for who has the most minutes/plays streamed

but it's made people stream music on mute just to get their count up on things nd act like "hey i'm a bigger fan than you of [artist/album/song] because i have more listens to it" like god shut up ur insufferable

it's upsetting how people try to manipulate their spotify wrapped nd stuff as a way to 'flex' like buddy no one believes ur 50k streams on one single song

alzo this doesn't mean u can't use websites liek last fm nd stats fm, i use em because it interests me! ^_^ they r kewl

but i dont like u if u listen to music on repeat. definition of a genuine poser

Lowkey real, I remember a quote from Trent Reznor (NIN) that people pay less attention to the music they listen to nowadays because it's not like they have to save up the money and choose one album over the other. It's sort of just something we listen to in the background now which makes people appreciate less the privilege of music

No seriously, kinda weird. Also like don't listen to my musicals on spotify any more, probably should but i'm definitely caught up on the whole ego thing.

people who try to force their wrapped stats actually scare me like idk. who r u doing this for.. what do u gain??? people botting scrobbles on last.fm make me so sad because like. now its impossible for people who listen normally to get onto the little top listeners bit. i do think music discovery on sites like that r nice though. i really like giving and getting music recs

Ok, I thought I was genuinely losing it when I thought something similar about it. Like, I only like seeing how long I’ve listened to my favorite artist, Not the sudden competitions over who listened to so and so more.
I’ll admit, It was “fun” at one point to listen to a new release and see who can get more listens but then it quickly got fucking annoying.

I also hate the way its made people care more about numbers than enjoying the music. And I especially hate how its spread to the musicians themselves too, to try to get their fans to get their streaming numbers up in return for something. I listen to Waterparks and I've had a big issue with Awsten doing stuff exactly like that repeatedly for the past like year and a half at least. When it gets to the point you feel you need to put together whole fan accounts to count streams and graphics with instructions for gaining streams on a song (both things I have seen within the past year and a half), you really should step back and think about what you're doing.
I do use last.fm, but just because I like seeing what things I listen to in lists and diagrams like that, I don't care about the actual numbers. I know some people genuinely can and will outside of trying to increase streams, but I find it nearly impossible for me to sit there and listen to a song more than 3 or 4 times in a row, and even that is pretty rarely.
