Collecting Physical Media Again

Has anyone else gotten back into collecting physcial media again?

After hearing about sites like MTV News and Comedy Central having their digital libraries scrubbed and lost to history, I've been more determined than ever to get back into collecting physical media again.

On top of that, Sony is looking to cease production of Blu-ray discs and other "optical disc storage media products" (probably blu-ray players and portable ones, too).

My collection is pretty small right now, but I'm nearing 10 DVDs and 5 CDs :D For DVDs, I have movies such as Spiderman (2002), The Devil Wears Prada, and Freaky Friday (just in time for the sequel to be announced).

In terms of physical books, my shelf is nearing 100 books!

I think it's an integral time now more than ever to reignite the drive to collect physical media, as it's shown time and time again that streaming services do not have consumers interests at best. Services can shut down any day and snatch their libraries of movies and shows with them. For me, I'm looking forward to growing my DVD library.

I've been trying to, I just don't trust streaming as the future.

me neither... especially since they can take off any movies/shows whenever they feel like it

yep, and effectively make them lost media again.

the only digital media I have full faith in is my own collection.

for me it's mostly DVDs, CDs and... Casettes actually, tough I need to fix my deck. I really like tape in general, also happened to come in posession of a proper reel-to-reel player but it doesn't work either, it's old as hell and the belt is probably less rubber more tar. Not that I'm complaining - it's a beast and I got it for free.

I’ve always collected dvds but I’ve definitely started collecting more now and visiting dvd and cd stores / stopping by the media section at Walmart and target for movies. Not just because my Wi-Fi has been going down a lot () but because as said in many YouTube videos, you don’t actually own the content on the streaming services you pay monthly for. They can literally pull the show you’re watching and you’d just have to deal with it or find another service that has it so why not just get the dvd for it and own it forever. There is obviously still a demand for them since they’re still being made also you get cool extras in them

no bc i was bummed to hear of places such as walmart and best buy gutting their dvd sections when it's getting more clearer that people are starting to get fed up with streaming. i've even been debating lowering my spotify tier to take out hulu because i don't even use it much and i'm still plagued with ads.

absolutely. it's way more worthwhile to collect discs than to pay $$ to several different streaming services only for them to remove items at will. there's also something sensory about the physicality that I really missed, having grown up on VHS tapes (not going back to THOSE lol). both the permanent Having of an object and the noises involved when you use them. (pop, clatter, kerchunk! whirrrr.... bzz... bzztt... *music!*)
that being said it's hard or impossible to find certain lovely smaller titles in thrift stores, and I don't have the $ to buy everything new. <:/

i have also been getting into physical media too!! I have around 100 dvds, 150 books(including manga), 7 vinyls and 20-25 cds as of right now! thrift shops often have a lot of great deals for these stuff, as do garage sales. You can also find bundles of books and dvds on secondhand online shops too!! Hoping to expand by collection<3

definitely keep up the physical collecting! it's necessary these days where we are "owning" less and less of the physical media that we purchase...

I have a bunch of series and movies on DVD and Blu-Ray, and some music as well; my music collection used to be much bigger, but I sold a majority of it. Don't regret it, since I backed up all of my rips to my PC :P

i’m also a huge collector of physical media. can boast over 100 cds, a good 20 dvds, and a handful of vhs tapes and cassettes. definitely recommend going to second hand shops to find stuff for cheap, but i also like buying small band’s physical music on sites like bandcamp to add some uniqueness to my collection:) best of luck with collecting!!

Definitely hit up Goodwill, tons and tons of DVDs and they're starting to get Blu-rays now, too.

my friend and i spent a good 2 hours at savers going through all the dvds and checking for scratches, it was a very worthwhile experience! hoping to get a proper large shelf to store it all down the line.

i've always tended towards buying games and books physically. not for any particular moral reason, but just because i like looking at cover art. i'm a just a bit miffed that CDs are borderline nonexistent these days if you're not shopping online.

...that thing about sony ceasing production of blu-ray discs is concerning, i guess their next console really will be digital only. not like it'll matter either way since it won't have any games

thrift stores and ebay/mercari have been my saving graces in trying to find old CDs and DVDs!

and yeah, it's already concerning at sony as the ps5 has a digital only console with no physical games, and i wouldnt be surprised if their next gen is only digital games only.

Anyone who has a serious interest in crafts, art, entertainment, or the sciences is crazy or stupid to eschew physical media. Streaming and browsing are great for discovery and perusal, but you want to own books/tapes/discs/etc. of anything and everything that you love.

Thanks for notifying me about Sony's discontinuance.
