Board game age

What gets me is how many classic board games (and crosswords) were invented in the early 20th century. I know there's other games they played way back but imagine... a world of no tv/radio/cinema/electric light and no Scrabble or Monopoly or crossword puzzles. Either you learn chess & small talk & hard back books or you get bored fast.
