Hey SpaceSleepers (18): My Love-Hate Relationship w/ Sonny Angels

Okay, you might look at that title and go, "Mars, why would you hate Sonny Angels? You like kewpies and they're basically the same thing!" The answer is in that question: they LOOK like kewpies but aren't. Their resemblance is so close except for the fact that they are "cuter" than kewpie and that they have a penis. There is nothing WRONG with them having genitalia in concept except that it makes them seem more like actual human babies instead of weird little creatures that have peach heads which makes having them feel a little weirder if they're not fully clothed. Perhaps that is the appeal of them, they are more human-like so they seem a lot more appealing to the average person. The issue is that they are constantly compared to the thing I like which kind of urks me because I find them to be like kewpie's clone that is made to capitalize off the popularity of kewpie but also to sand off the weirder edges of the dolls. I think the problem maybe to me is that they're more obviously consumerist. What I mean by "more obviously" is that they come in blind boxes, something that embraces purchasing more and collecting all of them through trying to take chances on which one you'll get. It feels more predatory in a way, which bothers me a little. They're less weird to be more marketable, and thusly collectable, which feels oddly like they're NFTs, ironically, even though they're a physical product.

The thing is that I don't actually have just hatred for them, I do like them as well (i.e. it is a love-hate relationship). I, myself, have two Sonny Angels, one with a strawberry hat and one with a pineapple hat and adhesive. They're really cute and I understand the appeal of them but I like kewpies because they're a little strange looking. I think that they have this weird vibe to them that is a little alluring, with their long eyelashes and lack of ears. My dislike for
Sonny Angels is rooted in the fact that they're popular and compared to a thing I like, yeah, but the fact that they are a clearer consumerist face of something that I try to ignore about having interests in collecting things. It causes me to foster a bit of a distaste towards them but not an outright dislike regardless of my existing issues with them. Anyways, this doesn't matter all too much because they are both symbols of consumerism so at the end of the day it's just which ever piece of melted and molded plastic you like better. (06/24/2024).
