Music Diary 3: Finally! by The Aquabats!

Two days ago, The Aquabats released their newest album!!

Initially looking at the tracklist, i thought that Whatever Forever was going to be a little more cynical, but no! It's upbeat and reflective!! I really like it :) I just know that "summon the dolphins!" is gonna cue a bunch of pool toys being tossed to the audience once they tour this album (WHICH I'M GONNA GET TO SEE!!!! :D).

tbh Unicorn Babies is grating, and that's prolly the point, but still. Someone pointed out that it sounds like MCBC doing his Plex voice. But hey, it leads into Dr Space Mummy!! I'm not crazy about this track, but who can resist a good villain song. Especially since Dr SM has been MIA in The 'Bats lore for so long!

I REALLY like Bunny Teeth. I think the lyrics r cute and those horns!! Those HORNS!!! Easily in my top 3 fave songs from this album

Speaking of top 3, ALGEBRO!!!! omg Algebro. This one's so so cool. It's the first song I actively re-listened to after hearing the album for the first time. And Crash sings on it!!! Hell Yeah!!!!

Let's Go Live in a Cave is alright I guess. The sentiment is relatable and it sounds nice, but it's not knocking my socks off

But immediately bringing the energy back up is Where is Walter Fang!!! This one is just awesome, I love the samples, I love that you can hear Ricky in the beginning, I love the silly gang vocals, I love Bones screaming "Chorus!". Also I forgot abt the Randy Savage bit at the end that's funny

Roofus the Doofus is fun, it doesn't overstay its welcome and is silly in the best way :) also Massachusetts mention lets go!!

Spider Love just makes me think of the spider bride from Monster Wedding. Gotta love a Bats song that tells a very specific story. But I can't help but be like "why do you hate spiders :( they're just trying to live :( why do you hate their love :(" It's hard being a fan of animals that ppl consider 'evil' and 'creepy'.

This album has not one but TWO villain songs! I actually like Sunblocker a lot more than Dr Space Mummy. The horns are great and the chorus sounds like it's from the Supershow. A real neat jam >:) I hope this song has a villain fight for the stage shows

Little Lady Amazing is cute. It kinda has Luck Lady Dragon vibes (Little Luck Lady Dragon Amazing?). I have to wonder who this song was written about, I can't find any info on who wrote the lyrics, but it sounds like someone singing abt their daughter

Go Humans Go just makes me think abt that 'Scooby Doo taught us that humans were the real monsters' meme. It's a head bobber, tho.

Ah, No Rewind :). How can I not love this song, it's cute, it's positive but not cloying, it's got an AWESOME music video, it's so lovely :]

Don't Make Me Run is... fine, I suppose. Again, it's not awful, but it's not knocking my socks off.

Ballad of the Shipeshifting Pilgrim Boy is appropriately long and epic. I like that there's a reference to the Supershow on this album, it makes me want to rewatch the episode it's based on.

Finally has very slight Hello, Goodnight vibes (but don't be mistaken, absolutely NOTHING can top Hello Goodnight). This is such a chill send off, which is pretty in line with other Bats albums. If there's anything The Aquabats know how to do, it's start and end an album in a satisfying way. This song is obviously a sweet but firm goodbye, but it sort of leaves the impression of "hey, we're not gonna see you around as much, but we'll still be kickin'!". idk how to describe it.

Overall, a really good package!! Even if I didn't jive with a song too hard, the guitars, keys and horns sounded GREAT!! I have a suspicion that this may be the last Aquabats album (don't quote me on that, but it does sort of feel like it), and it's a lovely way to say goodbye. High energy and silly as usual, but also reflective and genuine. Honestly one of the best parts of this album was seeing the reactions of ppl I followed and getting to see the hype and mix of opinions. I'm so excited to see the Bats live in July :3
