The solar system started developing around 4,55 billion years ago. 

With the creation of the Sun, a protoplanetary disk was created around it. A protoplanetary disk is a flat cloud of gas dust around a (new) star.

When the sun was still a protostar, the protoplanetary disk was made only of a few minerals. But later, thanks to the radiation from the sun created by fusion, other minerals were created such as iron-nickel alloys, sulfides, phosphides, oxides, and silicates. These particles started grouping together due to gravitation and made bigger objects - planetesimals

The inner part of the solar system (around 4AU from the sun) was very hot, so planetesimals could only be made of compounds with high melting points like metals and silicates.

Once the planetesimals became bigger than 150 km, the material inside them started partially melting, and a metal core was created. New materials were also created, but because there weren't many of them around, the planetesimals didn't grow very big.

These objects continued to connect to each other and started forming terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars).

Gas giants were formed out of icy materials because the space further from the Sun was cool enough for these materials to be solid. The ices were more common than metals or silicates, and there were much more of them, which is why gas giants are so much bigger. Gas giants grew massive enough to capture H and He, and are made mostly out of them.

The reason Jupiter is the biggest gas giant is that it uses up most of the material. Saturn started forming later, and there wasn't as much material left to use. The same with Uranus and Neptune.

after 3-10 million years, the solar wind blew away all the gas and dust, and the formation of the planets stopped.
