I watch a lot of video essays and do way too much extensive research into videogames / subjects I really like—example being, for this post, bloodborne
Over the past two years that I've been into bloodborne (despite being familiar of the game since 2015 when it came out, because my dad introduced it to me) I've learned so much about this game through my own readings of item descriptions, placing together dialogue, video-essays and primarily my own gameplay, that I thought i'd share some of my favorite videos that explain this decrepit, timeless world in a way that i believe sheds as much light as possible on its two apparent concepts; motherhood, maternity, rebirth; the unsightly, ugly horrors of what lies beyond human comprehension
i must warn first though, in reality this game harbors a ton of very heavy and sorrowful concepts that even make me kinda =( at times, just a forewarning before i get into these videos
starting off first is ShinigamiEater's 'Bloodborne: A World Without Hope; I enjoy this video a lot mostly because of the way it starts off appearing as a comedic standpoint, of someone simply gushing about their love for a game, but as he continues to describe the game it becomes more apparent that it is a retelling of the misfortunes that make themselves apparent in this game the farther you progress. I like the way it shows off the visuals of the game, whether it be in concept art, music, or in the game itself, and just the way that he describes these tragic figures such as Gehrman and Ludwig through the course of the video makes this description of bloodborne carry such a heavy weight to me. I wish I could share it more personally with friends of mine but very little of them show interest, so this is my medium :' )
secondly is Honey Bat's 'Visceral Femininity: A Bloodborne Video Essay'; this video carries a lot of importance to me and has dictated a lot of the way i view the great ones and the women that appear in this game—of course, in a positive way, but in a sort of morbid light. the themes of motherhood never became as apparent to me as before i watched this video; obviously, i knew of it, though—Mergo's Wet Nurse, Queen Yharnam and the tragedy of her stolen stillborn Mergo, Arianna and Oedon, the Plain Doll and her maternal attitude towards the hunter, hell, Mother Kos and the greed of Byrgenwerth—but after the themes that were brought up in this video had been made clear to me i realized that this game wasn't just about humans taking advantage of themselves and the unseen and becoming something else because of it, but the suffering of these people was because of motherly desire, the need to protect and to give to offspring that these beings can never have. All of the horrors that come from yharnam are a result of want. Of need. Of motherly desire and painstaking addiction.
Despite the descriptors that these videos carry, though, in how it portrays the depressive art that bloodborne is in its entirety, it doesn't precisely show the gameplay of this game very well, to which I'd like to introduce a few videos I find fun;
ji_mothy's 'Playing Bloodborne as Miyazaki Intended': this is essentially a highly specific perfect runthrough of bloodborne including all character quests, item pickups, necessary chalice dungeons, and bosses
JackSepticEye's bloodborne series: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, and 2024 FULL RUN THROUGH; i find this series to be funny and enjoyable by part of how much this game seems to mean to Seán (he shows off a tattoo he got of the game as well as his girlfriend's darkbeast paarl tattoo!! how cool!!), this isn't as specific as the first one but is still a full runthrough of the game (except in the four part 2022 series he forgets to fight laurence D: how could he)
Baron's Castle's 'Can You Beat Bloodborne Normally'; This is a bug runthrough of the game that shows off some speedrun tactics, game/sequence breaking glitches, and some interesting secrets that were either cut from the game or are simply hidden behind chalice dungeons!
Lance McDonalds 'Bloodborne Cut Content Restored' series: Part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5; this is a series that actually has a lot more to it in a full playlist but shows off many unfinished layers to enemy developments that never made it into the game, as well as locations or features that were completely erased from the game. i find this series to be particularly interesting because of the cut npc interactions, especially with important figures like Father Gascoigne and Lady Maria. this series also includes CONCEPT MUSIC!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
if i haven't made it apparent enough in a majority of my internet profiles and the references i make, this game means a lot to me and carries a lot of meaning in my heart, i love to talk about it at length and describe the atrocities that happen in this world and why they happen. i have no idea how to describe it, but if i must, i love this game like the child i can never have
if you'd like, here are some other videos i like but didn't feel like describing up here:
hbomberguy's 'Bloodborne Is Genius, And Here's Why'
GameGrumps' 'Bloodborne... THE MOVIE!' (2015)
Nomology's 'Bloodborne: Sins of Byrgenwerth'
VaatiVidya's 'The Beginners Guide to Bloodborne'
CUM CHALICE!!!! i mean Frilla Frisyr's 'Beating the Cummmfpk Dungeon In Bloodborne'
sorry for the long incoherent ramble i just felt like talking about bloodborne because i've been playing it a ton recently :')
