GENERAL PLOT

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic follows a pony by the name of Twilight Sparkle and her quest to find the true meaning of friendship. Guided by her teacher Princess Celestia, Twilight and her friends Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy and Rarity go through various challenges throughout the show which test them on their ability to make light out of dark situations, their loyalty, honesty, kindness, generosity and magic. Each of these characteristics is represented by each character, teaching different lessons to the viewer, (which I will go into deeper detail about next.)

THE ELEMENTS OF HARMONY

My Little Pony Rainbow Dash

Pinkie Pie represents the element of laughter. She highlights the importance of mutual joy between friends, teaching viewers to navigate how their friends affect their mental health, good or bad, and how to approach friends about their feelings.

Rainbow Dash represents the element of loyalty. She often finds herself choosing between her desires or her friends; which always ends in her choosing her friends. She does this within reason of course, as she is reminded by her friends to stay true to herself. This teaches viewers about the balance of integrity and loyalty.

Applejack represents the element of honesty. She never hesitates to be honest with her friends about her feelings, situations, and opinions. Applejack teaches viewers that honesty is extremely important in your relationships, whether your input is positive or negative, as your honesty means more to the structure of your relationship. Relationships built on lies mean nothing.

Fluttershy represents the element of kindness. Throughout the show, she demonstrates kindness towards not just her animals, but her friends. She never hesitates to treat every situation with kindness, making her the pony with the most friendships in the show. She teaches viewers to treat others with kindness no matter what.

Rarity represents the element of generosity. Similar to Rainbow Dash, she is willing to make sacrifices not just for her loved ones but for everyone in and outside of Pony-Ville. She’s often seen sacrificing her time as she gives the residents of Pony-Ville fashion advice, as well as stopping in her tracks to create outfits that ponies will love out of her generosity. She teaches viewers the importance of giving, and how strong of a love language it can be.

Twilight Sparkle represents the element of magic. Let’s face it, every friendship needs a little bit of magic to keep it together. All jokes aside, she highlights how magical friendships and relationships are. The idea that we can create relations out of our kindness, generosity, light, loyalty, and honesty is magical, and she represents that. She teaches viewers to not take their relationships for granted.

FAVOURITE CHARACTER

Pinkie Pie!!!

My favorite character in this show is Pinkie Pie. I love how she is there to make light of hard situations. Growing up, she helped me get over lots of my fears. As I got older, I realized that her background story helped me become who I am today. In her childhood, Pinkie Pie grew up around her mentally and physically gloomy relatives. She took that stressful situation and turned it into a positive one, using them as an example of how not to act, while also still loving them unconditionally.

REPRESENTATION IN THE SHOW

The Cutie Map Episodes

This episode is about the Mane Six visiting a town where every pony in the village has the same cutie mark. This proves to be an issue, as this episode goes over the importance of diverse interests and hobbies. However, this episode can be contradicting to young viewers, who are taught that equality is important, as it is, there needs to be a happy medium.

Disability - Scootaloo

Scootaloo is a young pony born with wings, making her a Pegasus. Although she has wings, she is unable to train them. She teaches children that disadvantages should never stop you, as she perseveres using her scooter to get around quickly.

LGBTQ+ - Rainbow Dash and Applejack

In this scene of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic we see older versions of the characters Rainbow Dash and Applejack. Here, Rainbow Dash is going on about how Applejack needs to let her do more chores around their shared home, implying that they are married. I’m getting ahead of myself, though. Click here for more details on their relationship. The representation of queer characters in media is super important in teaching viewers about their possible identities and the identities of others, so I applaud this show for providing that.

LGBTQ+ - Trixie

Trixie is an antagonist in the show. Unfortunately, she’s not seen often. However, she is confirmed to be transgender. Not only was her character meant to be a man, but her eyes only feature one highlight- which is a characteristic of traditionally male ponies. Once again, queer representation is important in media because it teaches kids about the identities of others and the possibilities there are regarding gender.

CONCLUSION

In summary, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a great show to choose if you want to teach your child about the structure of relationships, how to move on from negative situations, and diversity. Although the show can be confusing for the younger side of the audience, parents can fill in the gaps. Overall, I have enjoyed this show since It came out, and am not afraid to admit that I still enjoy this show. Its my favorite in the whole world!!!!!
