visual kei aint what it used to be, i was on tiktok and saw some make a video about "what vkei substyle are u!!!!!" and the only ones there were kote, oshare, tanbi, kurofuku, and softubi (labelled as soft-kei which is valid) and when i asked them about the others (i asked about iryou, okeshou, and loud) they said "what r those 💀" ... please get ur asses on livejournal, mh, and vk.gy.. the thing that is even worse is that no one knows kurafu and showa kayou and angura is a whole mess (kurafu is basically just punk and red kote in EXTREMELY simple terms and showa kayou is showa era inspired pop while having a 70s/80s vintage feel in visuals) i feel like i should explain angura without brackets since it is important (kinda, idk), basically angura is westernized term for wafuu.
now i need to rant about tanbi kei and vampire music. ever since the vkei boom on tiktok some new fans have decided to call vkei as a whole subculture "vampire music" .. nuh uh. visual kei was built off of glam rock and heavy visuals which slowly expanded into this massive and beautiful subculture, but mfs are out here minimizing visual kei into gothic (no hate to gothic music n stuff, i love gothic music) vampire 1800s fantasy character ai wattpad ao3 shit. i used to love tanbi kei and malice mizer but i get so embarrassed mentioning them because i dont want to get into a vampire music conversation.Â
where do i go with the misusage of terms. i swear every once in a while i will see people using japanglish for vkei terms (bando, bandomen) which is fine and i love the effort but it just feels corny whenever i see people use it lol, but there is a bigger problem, honmei/oshi, cheki, live, i will see people, usually the vampire music mfs go "i got a new sena photocard!!" or "i stan mana", it hurts. it deeply hurts to see people use the word "stan", neo visual kei's motive is to not fit in with mainstream-ness, stan is like marketing someone as a makeup product, to make yourselves them and put them all over you (dont take this the other way.). its like the kawaii situation but instead of people being wrongfully educated people are just uneducated.
ok, if youre new to the scene and honestly dont know anything and want to not be a tiktok-only-source poser, heres some really good sources

Yesss!!! Bro some people need to explore and research but apparently they don’t wanna take the time. Which is why I made my vkei subgenre blog very simple for newer fans I hate that Showa Kayou, Wafuu, Misshitsu, Shironuri, gets mixed into angura kei. Ik it means underground but it gets people think it’s like one.
