Graduation

Hello again History Friends,

I've just finished writing the Bulletin & I find those much easier to go through than these blogs. (Though this is also my first time writing one.)

Graduated today, full degree, with Honours, First Class Standing, Major, Minor, & additional certificates. Which is strange, I thought I was just some guy I really didn't know there was a special thing about getting your grades high until I arrived & they gave me the gown.

So to break the tension a bit, when you go to graduation (skip this paragraph if you don't want spoilers. I hope your graduation is a surprise just as mine was.) When you go to the convocation ceremony they have a lot of the University staff dressed in what are the traditional outfits of University staff. Think like...Renaissance original Universities. Loads of cloaks, Tudor Bonnets, hoods (which aren't actually hoods.). I know I'm a History major, but I still find it a bit funny.

I don't really know what to say! I wished all the people I knew & graduated with well, one guy spent six years there after he changed his major once or twice. One person I know is moving out west, everyone else I know is still in school. So I find myself at a loss on what to do now...Apply for things I guess. I don't think it's set in yet I have a degree.

I've studied Canadian History, European, Chinese, Middle Eastern. I've studied most of the world & now have the ability to study the rest of it. I took courses in German & French, & Classics courses heavy in Latin. I know so much & so little. I've taken courses in using Radar, Lidar, & all sorts of Remote sensing. I've poured over century old census documents & Annals, Sagas. I've studied transportation planning & civil planning. I have a book on everything somewhere.

But best of all, now that I'm done school, now that I've put in the time & studied Medieval wars (& argued much more over timelines of events) talked about Cluny, I can tell you this. University was great & every year seemed better than the last. I have a small group of friends I did a trivia event with. I learned today that my name was said a lot during my department's abroad trip in the U.K.

Perhaps greatest of all is now that I've written hundreds of pages on small historical events on Scottish Kings, on Church History, on Crime in Italy, on the Sicarii, on the Coal Wars of West Virginia, on alcohol production in colonial America. I finally feel free to write fantasy again. Yes, that's the one thing they won't tell you, it becomes so much harder to write a D&D session while studying history. Because after the last dozen pages you don't want to write a mite more, even if it does have dragons in it.

Anyway sorry for ranting, to you, readers all this means is you can message or ping me history questions & have like an 85% chance of me saying "Well I don't know, it's kind of complicated." or you could annoy me by saying "teetotaling Puritans" because I wrote a huge paper on how the Puritans loved drinking in my last year. I'll be online & seeing you all around, open as always, awkward as always.
