hotline miami is a game where you will die a lot, if you get hit once by any attack you will die, the game is a pretty short fast paced top down shooter
story
the story follows a war veteran named jacket who has been getting misterious calls guiding him to go out an kill members of the russian mafia as you go through the game you will see multiple cutscenes where jacket talks to the peronas he has attributed to his many masks they constantly ask the question of do you like hurting other people, its a question you will run into time and time again weather it be directly or indirectly every mission has very energetic synthbased edm music in the background but once you finish the mission the music stops and you have to walk back through the building riddled with dead bodies, bodies of people you killed and you have to wonder do you like hurting other people it is a very interesting idea for a game to pose.
gameplay
The gameplay of hotline miami is pretty simple but thats what makes it so replayable all you have to do is pick up weapons and kill enemies there are guns and melee weapons guns cannot be reloaded once you empty them out all you can do is throw them and melee weapons are innefectoive against some enemies
enemies
there are a few enemy types in hotline miami there is you basic enemy who can have any kind of weapon and dies in one hit
there is the fat dudes who die in 8 hits or can bleed out from one hit
there are dogs that will sneak up on you and scare the shit out of you
and there are a couple bosses throughout the game like the biker or the mafia boss
masks
i mentioned earlier that there are masks and these masks are a major part of the game each mask gives you a different ability and a couple are extremely overpowered like tony who has killing punches and brandon who is extremely fast these mask can be found hidden throughout the levels.
the puzzle
as you go through the game you will eventually find puzzle pieces they are pretty hard to spot but they appear as little green squares on the ground if you get all the puzzle pieces you can unlock the true ending of the game
music
if you ever played or watched someone play hotline miami you know the music kicks ass its damn near the best video game music ive ever heard and can get you really pumped or calm you down my favorite songs from the games are Roller Mobster, Its safe now, Miami, and Inner animal but the whole ost kicks ass
art direction
hotline goes for a very 80s look with 16 bit graphics and a lot of neon lights it really shine in the night club levels where there are a lot of flashing lights and gunfire
conclusion
hotline miami is a really cool retro style shooter and is definitely worth a play
