Adventure Time. I don't know if I've made this at all obvious (in my profile, in my username, on my various online accounts, embedded into my very personality...) but Adventure Time is probably my favourite show of all time. Nothing has come close to giving me the same feelings of nostalgia, whimsy, comfort and homesickness as this show. I really mean it when I say the show is a central part of my being, and I am wholly convinced that my personality is just an amalgamation of aspects of the show. It just really means a lot to me, y'know??? With that being said, in this blog, I will be reviewing every single episode of Adventure Time as part of what will be my third (woefully low, I know) rewatch of the entire show! That's right, all 283 of them!! Come along with me as I rate title cards, analyse episodes and give an ULTIMATE TOP TEN!! by the end of it!!

I will be ranking each individual episode based on a few categories, but none of it is going to be very harsh or serious critiquing! My ranking will go like this:

Like I said before, this is not me trying to be overly critical and these opinions are very subject to change. I just want to rewatch my favourite show ever and really really think about what I love the most about each episode! It's not very serious at all, and I hope my opinions don't ruffle any feathers (but who cares that much, really?? It's a silly kids show that was created in 2009..... anyway)

EP 1: Slumber Party Panic (2010)

Title Card Ranking: Iconic. Simply iconic. Who are these girls dancing in a green void? Who knows? 7/10.

Before we go on to ranking this episode, I have to make something clear. Season 1 has a very special place in my heart... but it often goes skipped when I rewatch the show. It's very nostalgic, but it is very much the part of the show that is mostly geared towards kids (the whole show is, I know!! This is just the heaviest part of that) and so I will usually start around season 3. However, I did say I'd be watching ALL 283 episodes of Adventure Time. And this one is the first.

Slumber Party Panic is actually not the first episode of Adventure Time I'd ever seen. I'll let you know when that one comes up. But as for this episode, it is very very sweet. I smile every time I hear Finn's prepubescent voice and I feel a great deal of appreciation for Jeremy Shada's talent. In a way, I grew up with him and Finn! So, seeing Finn and hearing Jeremy Shada's very first episode with him makes me feel a little emotional!

There are some aspects to this episode that I just... ignore. Like Finn's crush on PB. I never liked that as a child. Still don't like it now. Not much to be said about that!

Overall, this episode is very very special to me, but there are many other episodes that feel wayyyy more poignant with all of it's silly stuff.

EP 2: Trouble in Lumpy Space (2010)

Title Card Ranking: I will always appreciate the artists going so absolutely hard on title cards for such.... yeah,, episodes. 7/10

This episode is very slightly overwhelming for it to be THE second episode of the show. But I appreciate that. It's admirable, in it's own special way, to introduce us to a character like LSP so early on in the show's run... I'm sorry LSP fans. I just don't like her very much. She gets better as the show goes on but this is NOT her best showcase. Also, Trouble in Lumpy Space and Slumber Party Panic were a dual premier! I was thinking about how similar the old school horror movie vibes were - zombies and 'lumps' (basically a werewolf thing, like LSP says) - so it totally makes sense that they come as a pair. In that case, my judgements for Slumber Party Panic count here as well. But I like Slumber Party Panic more.

EP 3: Prisoners of Love (2010)

Title Card Ranking: Ice King's first title card appearance!! Overall vibey. 6/10.

OHHH goodness this is the one. The first episode of Adventure Time I ever watched. I still remember how I felt when I saw it. I was 7 or 8 years old, having come home from primary school. It ended at 3:30pm and I'd usually get home at around 4pm and turn on some cartoons. I do not know why, on that particular day, I chose to put on Cartoon Network. The Adventure Time intro was playing. I was intrigued by that immediately, and sat down to watch. The episode starts out with Finn and Jake sledding in the Ice Kingdom. They crash, and their sled breaks, but Jake comes up with the solution to use each other to sled and reveals his stretchy powers. I was very captivated instantly by how fun the episode had started out as. After using each other to sled and crashing through penguins and an icy tunnel, they run into Ice King. He scolds them for trespassing in the Ice Kingdom, to which Finn replies that they are trying to escape the heat of a Lava Man sleeping in front of the Treehouse. Finn describes him as being 'so hot', and Jake teases him for it, to which Finn replies that he did not mean 'sexy hot'. Jake then teases him again, saying he did mean 'sexy hot'. As a kid, I was so shocked to hear them say the word sexy! It was a kids show! You can't say that, it's a grown-up thing! All that is to say that I was unbelievably intrigued by the absolute AUDACITY that this show had to say things that I thought were forbidden as a child, and thus, my lifelong obsession with Adventure Time began. 7 or 8 year old me had NO idea just how deeply this show would impact our lives. I don't think I watched anything other than Cartoon Network from that day on, and I was also introduced to some incredible shows like The Amazing World of Gumball and Regular Show.

Anyway, on to my thoughts on the episode now. I love Ice King. In the early seasons they were setting him up to be the comedic, pathetic villain of the show but I absolutely adore how, even then, little attributes of his really tragic backstory were cropping up. Knowing what I know now, I can't help but feel so bad for him when he thinks they all started having a lot of fun because he left the room. I relate to you, Ice King. This episode truly feels like quintessential Adventure Time. Nonsensical, wholesome, princesses, Finn and Jake taking out the bad guy and teaching a moral lesson with it. I love it.

EP 4: Tree Trunks (2010)

Title Card Ranking: I love Tree Trunks so much. Look at her pose. 8/10

I BELIEVE this is the second episode of Adventure Time I'd ever seen. Another absolute showcase in the audacity I thought this show had as a child. The proper introduction of Tree Trunks, an absolute legend amongst every single character in the show. Nobody can match her 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴. I also want to show my appreciation for Polly Lou Livingston, who passed away in 2021. Without her voice and delivery, Tree Trunks would not have been nearly as impactful and hilarious a character!

 I like this episode for a lot of reasons, namely how absurd everything Tree Trunks does is, Finn's emotional outburst (it's reminding me of how much he ends up growing by the end of the show), and the ENDING. The ending TERRIFIED me as a child. What HAPPENED to her?? Why did she just EXPLODE?? I remember every episode I watched after I'd be hoping that they'd answer the question of just where in the hell did Tree Trunks go?!?!

EP 5: The Enchiridion! (2010)

Title Card Ranking: When I saw this title card, I thought to myself, 'why does this have such an ominous aura to it'? And then I looked up the REJECTED CONCEPT?? TW FOR GORE but it contains Finn holding an ACTUAL dagger, having completely disembowelled Jake, who is crying blood from one eye while his brains leak out of his other empty eyesocket?? HUH??? I GET THAT SOMETIMES THE TITLE CARDS DO NOT HAVE TO REFLECT EVERYTHING THAT GOES ON IN THE EPISODE BUT... WHAT?!??!? Oh yeah my ranking... uhh disturbed/10.

According to Wikipedia, this episode was the first ever episode to be produced. That explains why Cinnamon Bun's voice is different, and why this episode in general has a 'first episode ever and we're just figuring things out' sort of vibe. The Enchiridion is one of those canon events moments, where I look at lil Finn so excited to get it and I'm like... perhaps you should have let this thing stay with Mannish Man (WHO, BY THE WAY, SHOULD HAVE MORE APPEARENCES?? I LOVE MANNISH MAN!)

Overall, I do not mind the plot of this episode. It's a formative one for sure, but I have seen it many times at this point and it's just, yeah! Classic episode, classic vibes, the introduction of the Enchiridion, which goes on to be something MASSIVELY important.

Title Card Ranking: Why is the liquid in the title card white when... the Jiggler fluid is... pink... hm......... 6/10.

This is another classic episode that I've seen MULTIPLE times, but I do not remember it stressing me out as much as it did this time around?? The confusion, the desperate attempts to help... I guess it's because I know how they're supposed to help the Jiggler but they're doing everything completely WRONG for most of the episode. Ah well. They learned their lesson.

Title Card Ranking: A really fun one. I love all the red and I love Ricardio's evil face. 7/10.

This is probably one of the only Finn crushing on PB episodes that I actually enjoy, purely because I think PB is very sweet and the mystery of if whether Ricardio is a bad guy or not is still very fun to watch! Also, it took me far too long to realise that Ricardio's name is a pun. Not much else to say about this one tbh considering I enjoy the other Ricardio episode a lot more!

I don't really have a lot to say about this episode. It was one that I saw a lot of reruns of on Cartoon Network. It's just meh.

Title Card Ranking: I love the composition so much. It's a scene from when they were sat in front of that big fire thing in the episode!! 8/10

I really enjoy this episode and I'm not too sure why. The plot doesn't feel particularly interesting to me. I guess the Jake centred episodes are a lot funnier than the Finn centred ones in the early seasons. He feels a lot more relatable to me now as an adult than young Finn does. Also, Lady and Jake's relationship NEVER fails to warm my heart. This was a really nice example of a couple working through something that is troubling them, as much as the constraints of an 11 min episode will show.

EP 10: Memories of Boom Boom Mountain (2010)

Title Card Ranking: It's fine! I read that there was a miscommunication and that Pendleton Ward didn't really dig the goose, and suggested to incorporate something about the Boom Boom leaf. Phil Rynda was then later surprised to see the goose one painted, but they all liked it so it didn't really matter. 6/10

Again, this is an episode that I saw a lot of reruns of. I don't mind it overall. I am a huge fan of Finn's desire to mindlessly help every single problem that comes his way, and while the whismy of cartoon reality means that he can eventually help everyone, it is a good reminder to me that sometimes, in real life, you just can't.

Also, it's the first time we see Joshua and Margaret, who I love so so so much.
