Oranges are Orange

If you have ever wondered what came first the color or the fruit then I have got some news.

The tree actually was first. Oranges were actually just called “the fruit of the orange tree.” This later started to call the fruit oranges. Thus orange. people then started to name other similar colored things orange in comparison instead of red/yellow. (little add on it’s why despite the hair being orange they are called red heads- because orange wasn’t a named color and people just called it red).

This is actually very common. In fact blue is also considered a fairly new color. New in the terms of usage that is. In the Odyssey blue is never mentioned once despite most of the book taking place in the ocean. Because blue wasn’t a named color. Green was a name tho. You can usually hear in some old songs or song translations from old poetry the “green seas” or “green glassy sea”.

Society’s start with dark and light or black and white. Then start to add red into vocabulary and slowly divulge into mixed colors like orange a mix of red/yellow.

So if you’re ever wondering what came first. It was the tree.

Haha this reminds me of a certain forum reply I made on a thread asking why an apple wasn’t called a red (when an orange is called orange)

It’s interesting how human languages started with general concepts and eventually became more and more specific :o Though, I still recall the times I colored my childish drawings with a colored pencil named ”Reddish-Orange” or something so maybe we haven’t gotten too specific just yet

I completely agree haha i remember an old set of colored pencils my mom had that one was labeled something similar to “blue-purple” but now we would just call it indigo! I think it shows that as a society we are constantly progressing and will forever continue to do so :)))
