obscure interests: older kpop

welcome to my first blog post, which is going to be about...

older kpop (1st gen and 2nd gen)

the 1st generation kpop boy group H.O.T.
^^ the 1st gen korean boy group H.O.T. who debuted in 1996 ^^

in 2020 i got REALLY into 1st generation kpop. honestly not entirely sure how and why i became so obsessed. i first became a kpop fan in 2015. i was mostly into more newer groups. at the time that consisted of groups such as exo, got7, seventeen, etc.

i knew of some 2nd generation groups such as shinee, super junior, and big bang. i thought they were cool, and i listened to some of their music, but i mostly paid attention to 3rd generation groups. though as i discovered songs such as ´view´ by shinee i was definitely blasting those. when shinee member jonghyun released his song ´she is´, i again enjoyed the song. although i wasnt a megafan, i definitely considered to be shinee to be a group i enjoyed. my interest in shinee ramped up alot in 2018 and 2019, i listened to them constantly and my kpop fanaccounts started having the members as their profile pictures.

in 2019 i overall was alot more interested in 2nd gen kpop, i was obsessed with shinee and bigbang. i mostly paid attention to alot of their older content. i guess i started getting more into 1st gen because the accounts i followed on twitter were sometimes fans of not only 2nd gen but also 1st gen.

2nd gen was already talked about less compared to 3rd gen and 4th gen, 1st gen was that but practically tenfold. oftentimes when 1st gen was talked about in these spaces, it was mostly just talking about things like fanwars. that or just blatant misinformation. 1st gen kpop in itself wasnt really obscure, lots of these groups had millions of dedicated fans. it starts being obscure when you arent fluent in korean, or youre looking for content that was less popular. H.O.T. was my main interest when it came to 1st gen groups, they were extremely popular in the 90s so compared to fans of other 1st gen groups you have a very large amount of content to go through. though again, there was still misinformation and content that is hard to find.

i helped ´find´ a 'lost' book about H.O.T., which the members took part in. by ´find´, i mean that all i did was look it up on the internet archive to see if anybody had put it on there lol. and luckily someone had. so always remember to archive your book about some korean boy band from the 1990s.

there are groups where youll only find one or two photos of a member online. there are also ones where you have to deal with alot of misinformation on the group/members which is treated as fact. though there are some dedicated fans of these groups that spend time finding, editing, and uploading photos they find in magazines or on old blogs.

im not into 1st gen kpop as much as i was back in 2020, but i still find myself scrolling through 1st gen fanaccounts occasionally. or listening to their music. or watching the (i mean this in the nicest way possible) confusing poorly acted movies the members most definitely didnt want to take part in and was only made because the group had alot of fans and the company wanted money.

A classic. When I listen to this song I always think of a couple going shopping during the holiday season. There's also a 2016 version of this song and music video.

I´ve tried watching this movie several times and each time I get bored and confused and go do something else. No shade to SECHSKIES, I´m a fan of them. And the movie is actually pretty solid compared to alot of movies and shows kpop idols are forced to act in. I´ve also seen some fans make some pretty good edits using this film. 10/10 movie.

Beautiful song. Lots of H.O.T. songs, such as this one, relate to things going on in South Korea at the time. When this song was released, South Korea was going through a financial crisis. I read some posts that went more in depth about their songs and what they correlate to but I am not fluent in Korean nor do I know all the facts about South Korea in the 1990s so I won´t go into detail about the meanings of all their songs lol.

(Warning: the music video features things such as blood, car/motorcycle accidents, sickness, fights. to be honest parts of the music video come off as absurd more than anything but i thought i should provide a warning anyways lol).

yooo i love love love h.o.t (although i don't listen to them as much as i used to) and i love shinee and bigbang.even my pfp is jonghyun cause he's my bias. i'm also lowkey jealous that you got into kpop back 9 years ago bc i sometimes feel like i ended up being a fan too late for most of the 2nd gen groups i follow. you must've experienced so many great cbs back then.

it's really great to see people talking about 1st gen/ 2nd gen kpop :) left kudos btw

same! i dont listen to H.O.T. as much as i used to but i love their music. tbh its kinda surprising that its been almost nine years of me being a kpop fan. i remember shinees 1of1 comeback and i was obsessed with the song lol. still didnt consider myself a full on shawol at the time but i was getting into taemins solo music and i saw lots of posts made about shinee. even now 3rd gen groups are starting to become more inactive. part of me hopes that theyre like H.O.T. or SECHSKIES and stay relatively active in the entertainment industry while another part of me hopes they just quit and have a normal life lol.

i feel like 1st gen and 2nd gen as a whole need more appreciation lmao. also thank you for the kudos!
