Butterfly Talk

It’s weird how much
you are like a butterfly.

Cliché as it may sound
you’re a butterfly
trapped in a cage.
For you’re beautiful
but don’t see it,
and capable
but don’t believe it.

Because butterflies
are designed as such
and can’t see their wings
but others can.
And I wish you could too.
See yourself from my eyes,
and admire you.

Your pretty wings,
bringing colour in the world.
And them being as pretty
as they are strong.
Able to fly high
away from your rusty cage
on cloud nine.

And yet
you can’t see it.
Because you’re so used
to being chained down
that you can’t begin to imagine
a life of freedom.

But I believe in you
for by design
butterflies also have wings.
Wings that can take t hem away
far from their balls and chains
and to a place bloomed
with trees, grass and flowers
for them to rest
and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
