South Korea's economy heavily relies on foreign trade. Since just the 1960's, South Korea has drastically decreased in its use of agriculture for its economy.

Based on Rostow's criteria, South Korea was well into the drive to maturity by the end of the 1970's.

Currently, the economy is facing issues such as slowing growth, high levels of debt, weakening productivity, and an increasing elderly population.
