TIPS 4 SCENE KIDS!

CLICK ON THE WORDS UNDER 2 OPEN THE DROPDOWN MENUS!!!

STYLE

  • ☆ Don't worry if you are not allowed to dye or cut your hair, have piercings, or wear certain clothes. Not everyone has access to those things + its okay if not !!! :) This doesn't make you any less of a scene kid! You will have a large portion of your life to dress the way you want when you grow older.

  • ☆ DIY YOUR CLOTHES + ACCESSORIES!!!!! THIS IS A HUUUUGE PART OF THE FASHION THAT I THINK IS RLY RLY OVERLOOKED!!! Kandi is an example, but there's other things you can DIY! If you have an old shirt that is too small for you, you can turn it into a tube top and use fabric markers to draw a design on it! Also, if you can't afford band tees, make your own! :) Get an old blank shirt and either use fabric markers or make a stencil of ur fav band's logo + draw it on the shirt! It takes a couple shirts to get the hang of it, but its worth it + you'll get a lot of compliments :) nobody will have the same shirt as you!

  • ☆ Its okay to not buy from expensive brands like vampirefreaks + hot topic! Not everyone can afford those kinds of clothings! There's many other small businesses on Etsy and independent online stores that sell scene clothes + for cheaper as well! And besides--you can always DIY or thrift some of your clothes too :)

  • ☆ IT'S OKAY IF YOU CAN'T DO/WEAR A LOT OF MAKEUP FOR PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME!! Though big raccoon eyeshadow + black eyeliner is really associated with scene, if you are allergic or are unable to wear it, YOU DONT HAVE TO!! Keeping yourself healthy and managing your time is more important.
  • If you feel the need to do makeup bc you feel something is missing from your look though, consider checking out hypoallergenic brands of makeup. It's always better to use eyeliner that won't give you an eye infection + that you can trust. For me, Neutrogena and Mineral Fusion work best. However, most hypoallergenic makeup is very expensive so keep that in mind.

  • ☆ If you do have time to do makeup and aren't allergic, try using eye pencils + black eyeshadow rather than liquid eyeshadow and eyeliner. The smoky raccoon eye is pretty hard to achieve with eyeliner, and sometimes eyeliner can get in your eye and cause infections + pink eye. Me personally, I use eye pencil instead. Though it isn't as thin and sharp ended as eyeliner, it does the job very well for the smoky eye look. I may do a tutorial on my yt someday if you guys need! If you dont have black eyeshadow to fill your eyelid in after lining it with pencil or eyeliner, you can also fill it with eye pencil and smudge it to get your desired look :)

  • ☆ GO THRIFTING!! :) You can find a LOT of really scene lookin clothes for a really low price most of the time!! Also, if you're looking to DIY, you can find cheap plain clothes to customise!

  • Don't be afraid of weird looks from people. If you're walkin about and u notice that people are looking at you in a weird way bc of how youre dressed, IGNORE EM!! theyre too dumb to acknowledge the toils u went through 2 wake up + get dressed the way u are. Also a big thing ab scene culture is breaking away from the stereotypes when it comes 2 dressing. DARE 2 DRESS CHILDISH N NEON! DARE 2 GO OUT LOOKING LIKE AN IRL MONSTER HIGH DOLL!! on the flip side, you'll inspire many people though; that's how i got into the culture myself. dare 2 go out there and make someone realise that they like that style :)

☆ Some hacks:

  • ☆ IF YOU DON'T HAVE HAIR DYE TO DYE RACCOON EXTENSIONS INTO YOUR HAIR, USE WASHABLE MARKER! do not use a sharpie or alcohol marker. i learned this the hard way... the good thing about washable markers are 1, you can wash it out if you don't like how it looks or if your parents get mad, and 2, depending on the brand it can look pretty convincing if u use a black marker !! :) BE SURE NOT TO APPLY IT TOO CLOSE 2 THE ROOT OF YOUR HAIR. THAT WILL CAUSE HAIR DAMAGE!

  • If you dont have many pony beads to make kandi with and want to make kandi that is suitable for different colored outfits, make duotone cuffs. Duotone cuffs only use 2 colors of beads. Choose 2 different colors that you have clothes in the same color of. Make any pattern with those 2 colors. You will now be able to wear it with both of your outfits, even though they are a different color. This adds both variety 2 ur outfit with the other color of the bracelet, and saves you beads as well.

  • ☆ If you're scared or unable to get a real piercing, try ordering fake + magnetic ones. Make sure that the seller is a reliable one though. I am not allowed to have any facial piercings, but I found a cheap and reliable seller that sells magnetic septum piercings, and they look REALLY REALISTIC!! [link to different colors + prices of them if you want to see! i found them on amazon; lmk if theres another place tho since i dont rly support em ;_;;] if you put them in the right place on your septum, they should not hurt! I've had mine for ~10 months now and they're still working fine and dont hurt at all. for me, at least ; u may have a diff nose type

  •  ☆ Use dry shampoo with your hairspray while doing your hair! Hairspray helps keep ur hair in place, but dry shampoo helps give more volume too after backcombing it. Not to mention, it'll remove oil in the roots of ur hairs and makes ur hair look more matte rather than super shiny.

  • ☆ Try making outfits with what you've already got! Got a silly looking school play shirt and dont have any other clean shirts? That's fine! Find belts, pants, some socks, bracelets, you name it, that has the same colors. Style your clothes right!! Even if you dont think you can make a rly crunk-y looking outfit, trust me there is ALWAYS a way.

CULTURE

  • ☆ DON'T OVERDO IT. Not everything has to be RAWR XD RAINBOWZ N TACOZ N GIR!!11

Many times, I see people trying very very VERY hard to fit in with the stereotypical idea of being a scene kid + using tons of emojis forcefully + saying cringe stuff 24/7. This usually ends up in them being called a poser and its kinda sucky. If it doesn't come immediately for you, type in a way that is natural for you. If you find yourself having to reuse or saying the same rawr xd esque thing over and over and over again, are struggling to come up with something new, or people are having difficulty of reading what you're saying [applies 2 shortening of words] take a break. Type in a way that is comfortable for you.

Over time, you will end up using those emoticons + shortenings of words naturally and regularly and it will feel less forced than if you push yourself to use them 24/7 :)

  • ☆ TIMES HAVE CHANGED! What was okay to say on the original MySpace, like slurs [the most common one i seee, the r slur] IS NOT OKAY ANYMORE!!! Neither are some kinds of dark jokes [see bullet points below.] Just because something was cool back in the day does not make it okay for you to say. ESPECIALLY IF YOU CANNOT RECLAIM IT!!! this is just common sense atp

  • ☆ It's okay to be straightedge. Though sometimes looked down upon by other fellow scenies, abstaining from alcohol, sex, drugs, etc. is completely okay!!! You shouldn't be forced into wanting to do something that you are uncomfortable with. Anyone forcing you into doing stuff you don't want to is 1, not a good friend, and 2, going against scene morals of being able 2 express yourself the way YOU want to.
  • ☆ BEING SCENE IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO BE MEAN. POSER CULTURE SUCKS. I get that there's a lot of hate for scenecore kids out there and that people tend to attack anyone who doesn't have only specific bands listed in their bio. As much as you are pressured into it, just leave them alone. If they're open for music recs, drop some bands in their comments! Don't be rude about it! If they're snarky about it and say mean stuff to you, then yeah maybe they could be a poser [god forbid], but don't start a fight over it! Causes unnecessary drama.

  • ☆ Adding onto this, if you have been indicted into scene culture via TikTok, CHECK YOUR SOURCES. SCENE CULTURE IS NOT SOMETHING TO BE FETISHISED. I have noticed that many many many many new scene kids to this platform that come from tiktok seem to think that scene culture is the romanticising self harm, suicide, depression, etc.
  • It is not any of these things. And it should never be. You will be ostracized from scene culture on this website, and for a good reason. It is never okay to romanticise any mental illnesses or physical conditions.

  • ☆ Being a part of scene culture is not an excuse to act weird and infringe upon others' boundaries. I know that there's a lot of dark humour + sexual jokes involved in some aspects of scene, but there are many people out there who are very uncomfortable with those. Scene culture has since evolved from the MySpace era, and many things that were acceptable then are not acceptable now, such as elaborate suicide jokes, terrorism jokes, and racist remarks. There is a fine line between a dark joke or sexual joke and something malicious or upsetting.

  • ☆ FIND UR OWN UNIQUE STYLE + SIGNATURE !!! When you see a scene queen, u can usually differentiate btween them!! Why? bc they have unique traits or interests that other scenies dont have!! If u have an interest or hobby or thing that you feel is "un-scene" or "uncool" theres a great chance that it could be a factor that sets u aside + makes u unique from all the other scene kids!! some examples of this:
  • • Audrey Kitching was a very petite person who pioneered + normalised tiaras n tutus in scene style! She became one of the most influential scene queens on MySpace 4 introducing her own unique style!
  • • Lexi Lush was a big pioneer in DIY-ing stuff! Because of her unique wardrobe + style, she also became famous!

  • ☆ BUILD UR FANBASE RESPONSIBLY!! NOBODY LIKES A TOTAL DRAMA QUEEN. I know it's tough to avoid drama online + that it was a staple of MySpace culture, but for the billionth time--things have changed! Sure, every now and then u can make a fiery post about something that is driving u nuts about someone, but dont make it everything. Also, keep in check who u have in ur friends. Make sure that there r no weirdos who will make your page unsafe for others interacting with you.

MUSIC

  • Being scene doesn't mean you ONLY listen to Millionaires and Brokencyde and P!ATD and S3RL. Someone can be scene but also listen to other music alongside scene music. Again, poser culture sucks. Don't bash on someone for having a well rounded music taste.

  • Find bands that other ppl haven't discovered yet that you enjoy! A HUUUUGE thing in the og myspace scene culture was going 2 shows + listening to bands and artists that were considered underground + new ! Don't be afraid to experiment with music styles! Find something you like [and gatekeep it if you want /j]

  • ☆ Go to concerts if possible! Another rly big part of the og myspace culture was going 2 to tonnes of concerts + shows!! *if you are not old enough or are unable to due to strict parents, dw :) you'll be able to go to plenty when ur older!! <3

  • BUY BAND MERCH IF U CAN! Show off the bands u like irl!! Support em [if theyre not problematic ofc] w buying shirts, vinyls, posters, n accessories !!

  • Don't give a crap ab the ppl making fun of ur music taste!!! If theres ppl out there telling u your music taste sux ignore them!! Promote ur fav bands in bulletins + on ur profile! It makes you unique + ur real friends + followers will check em out + it could be a staple feature of ur online presence :)

  • ☆ IF UR WORRIED ABOUT WHETHER SOMETHING CLASSIFIES AS "SCENE" MUSIC OR NOT, CHECK YOUR SOURCES !!! THERES A LOT OF STUPID STUFF OUT THERE. THERES A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCENE AND SCENECORE.
  • Many younger ppl rn seem to get their knowledge of what "scene" music is from places like Tik Tok and Tumblr. Most of the time, the artists people get recommended are more "scenecore" rather than scene.

  • "Well solvalou, whats the difference between scene + scenecore? why is it such a big deal? arent they similar?"

  • No, not really.
  • Basically, scenecore music is modern elecronic HYPERPOP music rather than 2000s scene music. It's its own completely different genre. The dressing style is similar to scene culture, but instead of having the same musical roots, it just takes the fashion without the musical background.

  • Another reason I don't like scenecore as much is because many of the artists' works revolve fetishizing 2000s scene + MySpace culture, but also mental illnesses + suicide + s/h.
  • Now I know that romanticising this kind of shit was also a thing in the 2000s, but that doesn't make it okay. Especially when the person's music is SOLELY DEDICATED TO MAKING THAT KIND OF MUSIC. Many scenecore artists also have gore + stolen artwork in their album covers, as well as sampling other songs with no credit and slapping a repetitive synth over it.

  • ☆ so then what is scene music?
  • Scene music is a mixture of EDM, crunkcore, and rock. Scene stemmed out of emo, so it has a lot of overlap in terms of rock, but it also has very notable aspects of electronic music and underground bands. WIKIPEDIA DEFINITIONS:

  • ☆ Crunkcore = musical fusion genre characterized by the combination of musical elements from crunk, post-hardcore, heavy metal, pop, electronic and dance music. The genre often features screamed vocals, hip hop beats, and sexually provocative lyrics.
  • ☆ EDM Electronic dance music is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres originally made for nightclubs, raves, and festivals. It is generally produced for playback by DJs.

  • Scenecore = Scenecore. Scenecore is a subgenre of hyperpop music that draws inspiration from the Scene subculture and Nightcore. Scenecore became popular in social media in the early 2020s as a modern take and revival of Scene culture.
  • its okay to listen to scenecore music!!! Just know that scenecore and scene are NOT the same thing.

☆ Some true scene artists + bands to check out:

Brokencyde, Dot Dot Curve, Breathe Carolina, Attack Attack!, Avril Lavigne [more skater music imo but still has some overlap], OMFG, Hair Jordan [only the new music tho], OHEMGEE, Millionaires, Kesha, I Set My Friends On Fire, S3RL, Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Scotty Vanity, Jefree Star [dont support him tho], 3!OH3, Basshunter, Gigi D'Agostino, Cobra Starship, nickasaur!, Mayday! Cried the Captain, Mimic a Stranger, A Last Failure, Slowmotionnoise, Big Time Crush, It Boys!, AaronChupa [more modern rave kinda EDM tho], Falling in Reverse, Pierce the Veil, Bury Me With You, Sleeping With Sirens, Amy Can Flyy, The Medic Droid, Escape the Fate, Alesana, EATMEWHILEIMHOT!, Scary Kids Scaring Kids

[again there is some sort of overlap between scene and emo music imo]

EXAMPLES OF SCENECORE

rebzyxx, h3artcrush, 6arelyhuman, odetari, LyteSpeed, Tr1st4n, ANGELMANE, roshyw, hospital, 03osc, kidsnorlax, Vampyx, Boy Fantasy, G0r3c0r3, kets4eki, syris, siouxxie sixxta, luvwillow, punkinloveee, Rylorie, ratrace90210, zeija, qtae, Xaxanity, luvwillow, hoshie star, ronin, SyKo, horrormovies, Pixel Hood, SUICIDAL-IDOL, 1stress, hateoryx

*again, theres nothing wrong w listening to scenecore [unless you agree w what theyre singing most of the time...]

just remember that listening to scenecore does NOT necessarily make you scene.

scene ≠ scenecore.

HOW TO NOT BE A POSER

  • As Maya Malice says: if u care enough 2 be called a poser, you probably aren't one!!! :) if people are callin u a poser, trust me, most of the time, they're the true poser.
alot of ppl now tell me that im a "SpaceHey scene queen" or whatnot, but in reality, I also got called a poser TONS when I first started exploring my place in this culture. Looking back at those people, most of them have indeed moved on from their scene "phase" and that just tells me hey; these ppl were insecure about their place in something and didn't want someone else to enjoy it. Dont let them bring u down!! <3

This helped me so much but I do have a question. I love listneing to scene music but I also listen to artist that aren't considered scene music like britney spears or beyonce does that mean I'm not exactly scene?

Ofc ur scene!!!

Just bc u listen 2 other artists doesn’t make u any less scene ; as long as u do listen 2 scene music every now n then, ur 100% scene in my books :)

i found the music part really confusing so like
is it okay if i dont listen to scene music that often?
i just dont really want to change my entire music taste js to fit in (ive already changed way too many things about myself)

Ya ofc!! So in other words, ur still scene if u listen 2 other types of music alongside scene music :)) it doesn’t make u a poser 2 have a well rounded music taste!! XD

I CAN AGREE SO MUCH WITH THE SCENECORE MUSIC PART!!! I hate artist like d3r, odetari etc. Their music isn't good as well (imo) and I only listen to maybe 2 or 3 of them that are not that bad.
