i need help with apple pencil

my apple pencil wont connect to my ipad. i stick the apple pencil into my ipad but it wont connect. i have the bluetooth on, the port doesnt have anything clogged up in it, and the apple pencil has full battery. can someone help me fix this? it hasnt been working for a long time.
