Unless you procure a verified email, spacehey will not allow for custom profile pictures. However, even after going through the steps of verification, it may take a while for that verification to go into effect.
In the mean time, I suppose one can play around with CSS. Here is a fun one. Blog posts are customizable as well through the use of the "<>" button in blog editor. After typing your code, pressing the "eye" button will then reflect back your changes.
Quite the neat little trait.
