just an idea for something i've wanted to write

NOTE: this is something i wrote a year ago without much thought! read my comment below, which has much more thought put into it.

i'm going to try writing a piece about a man who goes through the spiritual and mental awakening that resembles the way of thinking that young american adults are going through, as though as everything shifts. luckily, he discovers that life is wonderful and valuable, and that loving & understanding others is necessary. and the laws of reality suddenly don't make sense. he is going through a mental and theological journey. this is a love story, and it's about adopting sanctity and acceptance.

update to whoever reads this and cares!

i stopped working on writing this piece because i was finishing college, working, depressed, in an unsatisfactory relationship, and bored with life. but i've decided to revisit this idea and refine it into something that interests me. my initial idea was abstract and not very intentional in design. a more meaningful story would only occur if my headspace was less obscured by different thoughts, and now i am in a place to write a proper story and give it the attention that it deserves. i'm not a novelist, but when i think about creating a story, i think about something said by allegra goodman. when asked, "whom would you want to write your life story?" she responded, "i seem to be writing it myself, but since i'm a novelist, it's all in code." so i have a new idea for this story, and my new idea is like this:

coming from small-town marshfield missouri, the life of our narrator begins with intersparsed memories of childhood which run from bittersweet to sweet; and his reflections on his childhood includes commentary on the character of his mother, a woman whose upbringing renders her harsh and judgemental towards others. we are carried from childhood to college, where our narrator moves to big-city colorado as he adapts to a new and exciting fast-paced life: a life with structure, independence, and the drive to investigate the world, its history, and his place in the world. within the aimless phase after graduation, he returns to missouri to discover that his mother had committed suicide. suddenly. he discovers that he has the ability to reverse time and embarks on a journey to save his mother. along this journey, he must learn to re-conceptualize both his childhood and his relationship with his mother, realizing that relationships are painstakingly built and not inherent.

as i alluded to with the allegra goodman quote, this story is, in many ways, a reflection of my own life. i often think about the relationship between my mother and i, and wonder what i would do if she were to die. out of no fault of her own, and i say this as it entirely reflects my own mental issues, i wonder if i would even cry. outside of this literary plot, i need to answer the theoretical yet important question within my own life: what would i do to save my mother from suicide? writing this story, a great endeavor for someone like me, would be a great exercise for myself (and hopefully any reader) to consider this question in its entirety. i hope that i have the patience and integrity to write this story and do it justice!
