I like introducing people to music I enjoy, so I’ll create a litte blog post about songs I think people should try out!
First of all, I have to mention my all time favourite song, “Earthmover” by Have A Nice Life. This is the final track on my favourite album of all time, “Deathconsciousness”. It’s a crushing 11 minute mental breakdown of a song that basically feels like “the final straw”, if that makes any sense. It sounds like a mental breakdown, and acts as a soul crushing finale to an already depressing album. It’s not for everyone, but people in a certain headspace will connect with this one.
Keeping on the shoegaze area, is “When The Sun Hits” by Slowdive. While this song is not nearly as depressing as Earthmover, it still is pretty melancholic. It’s lyrics talk of watching a loved one “burn away”, and has some absolute beautiful instrumental melodies to back them up. It’s a much more “listenable” song than Earthmover, so I think anyone can enjoy it.
The final song I’ll talk about here is “Be Quiet and Drive” by Deftones. A classic alt metal/nu metal song with gorgeous riffs and incredible lyrical delivery. The lyrics are pretty vague, so their meaning is pretty up to interpretation. To me, it feels as though it’s about the narrator wanting to escape some traumatic event in his hometown. Some event took place that made the town “not feel mine”, so he wishes to drive “far away”. The climax at the end of the song before the fade out is immaculate, emotional, and endlessly satisfying to listen to. Highly recommended.
And yeah, that’s all I got for now. If you listened to these songs before, or because of this, let me know what you think!
