Javiera Mena made me a lesbian™

When I was a kid I listened a lot to the radio, there were this songs by female-chilean artists, later in life I discovered that all lesbians on my surroundings had an insane obsession with at least one (I was obsessed with Francisca Valenzuela, but by the name of this blog you might notice it’s not about her). Although I started to listen to Javiera’s full projects not so long ago, I can’t take her first record out of my mind “Esquemas Juveniles” (2006) (youth schemes). It is such an amazing album. It has some very amazing songs, written, performed and produced by her including an amazing cover of a song my mom liked on her youth.

The songs are very chill, not very much going on rhythmic wise. Her voice is also super calm, what makes them amazing are the harmonies and the lyrics. She makes some amazing (heartbreaking) love songs, she also has very upbeat songs but this record in particular is mostly low-paced and romantic songs.

I will give my top three and the reasons why they are there.

  1. Sol de Invierno: the intro (firs 7 seconds) is so soothing for some reason. Also this song features another one of my favorite artists, GEPE, together they sound amazing. Specifically from minutes 1:24 to 2:12,  on the last few seconds of that stamp she says my favorite line “Con las canciones de la radio, tantas canciones buenas” (whith the songs on the radio, so many good songs) it sounds very simple but I love it since this is one of the “good songs on the radio” that I listened to as a kid.
  2. Cámara lenta: to start let me mention the first 24 second. Art. Also this is one of her most romantic songs “cuando te miro, cámara lenta” (when I  look at you, slow motion) “Así yo puedo acercarme a ti y ver el límite en el que tu rostro conserva su figura de adolescente” (So I can get closer to you and see the limit at which your face keeps its adolescent figure). Javiera Mena is a lesbian, and she was a teenager when she wrote this song, so she coveys what teenage sapphic love is in such a beatiful way. (Bonus: minutes 4:20 to 5:26)
  3. Esquemas juveniles: the track that gives a name to the album. This song is what falling in love with a girl feels like, nothing else to add. AMAZING

Great album 8.5/10
