blog 2 !! [school project]

Blog post 2 on the history and cinematography of horror films and how the horror genre interprets and represents mental illness (+how horror movies effect the viewer)!!

This entry i'll be going into more detail about the history of the horror genre! I'll be splitting the timeline up,right now covering the 1890s-1960s,then next entry i'll tackle the 1960's to modern day.

    • What you have learned about your topic

-The first horror movie was a silent 1890s short film by the name of 'la manoir du diable'(also know in english as 'the house of the devil' or 'the haunted castle'). While the films original attention may have been to be more whimsical and mysterious,it also includes heavy imagery of supernatural beings, cauldrons, skeletons, transforming bats, and satanic spells.

Between the 1900s-1920s,a wave of supernatural-themed films came out.Filmmakers of the time, who were still getting their footing in the new genre, turned to using literature classics as source material for their films. This era of horror films produced movies such as 'the cabinet of dr.caligari' (1920),and 'nosferatu' (1922).

The 1930s-1940s is commonly regarded as 'the golden age of horror'.As technology advanced,so did the film industry. The new technology of .the time paved way for movies such as 'Frankenstein','the mummy', and the first color adaptation of 'Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde'.This era is also around the time that horror became the name for the genre itself. Before then it would be classified as 'romance melodrama with dark elements'. Other thing to note is that the 1930s-1930s is when universal picture's classic monster movies were released.

Throughout the late 1940s-1960s eras of horror cinema, now common tropes such as 'slashers' were being established. This time period of horror films was a product of its time, with the was that had been going on in europe. With that, the antagonists became less supernatural in nature, leaning to something else like radioactive mutation,'the invisible shrinking man',or 'godzilla'.As mentioned prior, horror movie staples such as the slasher trope were being established and defined. The beginning of the slasher horror movie sub genre is widely credited to alfred hitchcock, who directed the movie 'psycho'.

    • What you have learned about yourself
