2020 alt and the subculture that cringe culture killed.

2020 alt and the subculture that cringe culture killed.

hello ! today im gonna be sharing a polemic opinion i have on the 2020 alt kids, as someone who is currently studying a lot about alternative subcultures, scenes, and movements.

english is not my first language, so i really hope it's understandable  ;P
we all remember the 2020 alt kids, right? the mushrooms, the bunny hats, the monster cans... a "cringe" era, how everyone puts it now.
but if we look back at it, it had it's own political views, such as validating marginalized identities inside of the LGBTQ+, it had its own aesthetics, such as the bunny hats and the eyeliner all over the face, it had its own music, such as hyperpop and indie rock, it had its own medias such as danganronpa and sanrio series, and its own "mannerisms"
honestly, everything was so unique! and the teens were just all about this new culture and ideals....

having influence of older subcultures, the 2020 alt WAS the beginning of a new subculture and a new way of teens to express their opinions and their beliefs, giving a LOT of voice to non-binary identities and gender non-conforming people in general, also giving voice to neurodivergent people to talk freely about their issues and fight against the oppression in a way.

"oh! but they used to romanticize mental disorders a lot!" as an emo myself, it's a lot of hypocrisy to invalidate a subculture for romanticizing mental issues, when a lot of older subcultures, including emo, had this problem. it WILL happen anywhere and everywhere. it's a SOCIeTY issue, not an exclusive one.
"but they copied other subcultures!" no subculture is purely original... the scene kid fashion, for example, was heavily influenced by harajuku and kawaii fashion and vice versa, alt2020 just took elements of older cultures' styles, and there's nothing wrong with it, cause that's how things work.

so my point is: alt2020 WAS a subculture being born until the "cringe culture" came and started to destroy it, turning everything into "cringe" and discouraging people. older subcultures also went through disapproval, but alt2020, unfortunately, was killed by the NEED people for judging others.
my intention with this post is to talk about this, make other alt people realize that cringe culture affects us badly and maybe... just maybe... bring alt2020 back to life!

thank you for your attention, and once again, correct me if i made any mistakes ;D

When you are a teen in a subculture, it is a great sign when the older people do not like you. It means that you are doing something different.
Ur kind of right about cringe killing different forms of joyful self-expression
