my opinion on the "intrusive thoughts" trend as someone with ocd

this post is not meant to attack anyone, its mainly to educate people who don't know.

i feel like every time im scrolling on social media i see someone say "my intrusive thoughts won and i got a piercing" or "my intrusive thoughts won and i dyed/cut my hair". those are NOT intrusive thoughts and its very invalidating for people who actually have them. ocd and intrusive thoughts in general are very serious. ocd requires intense therapy most of the time.

intrusive thoughts are things u don't want to do, but ur anxiety tells u to/says u will. some examples of intrusive thoughts are:

-violent

thoughts of offing/hurting people, most often people u love, but sometimes even just random people as well

-sexual

thoughts of sa'ing someone, pedophilia, incest, and just general sexual thoughts about others.

-religious

thoughts that go against ur religion

-suicidal/sh

thoughts to harm/off urself

-germs/contamination

thoughts like "if i don't wash my hands, i will get sick", or even "i have a stomach ache, i have cancer." for example in 2020 when covid was really bad, my hands were literal crust. they were bloody and dry because my intrusive thoughts made me wash my hands/sanitize CONSTANTLY. i would wash my hands, then touch something, and id have to wash them again. i had to shower and sanitize my phone when i got home from school, and could not touch my backpack or any items inn it.

-doubt

thoughts telling you that intrusive thoughts arent intrusive/that ur actually going to act on them.  i have intrusive thoughts of offing people, and my intrusive thoughts often tell me i am actually going to do it and it is my actual thoughts.

(there's more kinds, but those are the most common)

impulsive thoughts are things you arent scared of doing and are willing to act on. some examples of impulsive thoughts:

-dying/cutting hair

-getting a new piercing

-eat a bunch of junk food

-buy something unnecessary

-to say something inappropriate in an inappropriate setting

also, i am not saying if u have intrusive thoughts u have ocd. anyone can get them!

an extra thing is, ocd isn't just needing to organize something a certain way. so don't say "I'm so ocd about cleaning my room" or something. it is way more than that. ocd fucks up peoples lives. i admitted myself to a mental hospital cause i thought i was gonna off my family. in 2020 my hands were cracked, dry, and bloody cause i constantly had to wash my hands and sanitize them after touching anything. i couldn't go to social events, and i had to shower every time i came back from school and couldn't touch my backpack or anything in it after school. please educate urself, don't say ur s ocd and say something completely normal to do.

anyways I'm done yapping bye!!

thank you so much for this!!!!! i hear "the intrusive thoughts won" so many times and it's so annoying... like if mine won i'd straight up be in prison or dead, not with a new haircut....... it's not a funny little joke, it's a horrible condition to deal with and misuse of the term is everywhere :(

I have seen this too! It's very frustrating when misinformation gets spread to this extent. It also leads to it becoming further stigma, and harder to talk about severe cases. Intrusive thoughts is also present with those who have anxiety disorders and such so I have experienced it myself. Hope you are doing well :)
