the late 2000s, early 2010s web

i know i'm talking from the perspective of someone who didn't even use any of these growing up, but could we bring back 8tracks, flickr and the rookie magazine????? plus tumblr, and random forums on the web?????

i know 8tracks and flicker are still around but they have nothing to do with how they used to work. i joined flickr a few months ago, which many of you might find weird considering that instagram exists and is now much more popular. but, to me at least, flickr feels much more like an archive than an actual social media

now flickr has a limited amount of media you can have on your profile, and you have to be a plus member for unlimited storage. and just like flickr, 8tracks is also pretty much hidden behind a paywall, but are we actually surprised? i'm not

about rookie, i learned about it through pinterest, with the little posters they used to make for their playlists AND THEY'RE INCREDIBLE. it seems so chill, i wish they brought it back, but, to be honest, i doubt it would work in this day and age, sadly :'))))))))))

then... there's... tumblr... I KNOW I KNOW BUT PLEASE HEAR ME OUT. then again, i know it's still alive and maybe even thriving. but is it really? now it's no longer mainstream at all, it seems kind of niche, which isn't a bad thing. i am very sure i would love tumblr if it wasn't so repetitive, i go there exclusively for sims 4 cc, and that's it, it feels so boring to me

oh and virtual worlds too, but considering most of them were flash based... i have no idea how web games work nowadays

also, i know this is probably just me, but i feel like there's nothing to do on the internet on your computer. like no, i don't want to scroll through the same 5 apps but on a bigger screen, i want things to do EXCLUSIVELY on my pc

no cuz i miss 8tracks soooo much Dx its still around but suuuuper buggy and barely any new mixes anymore ! and its so much more creative than most other playlist making sites. on spotify, everybody adds the same old songs to every mix EVER!!! 8tracks you cant see the tracklist unless someone linked it off the site, and you got introduced to new music that were still related to whatever theme of the mix is. very sad we dont have something like it anymore :'< i genuinely do miss old internet. im in the same boat as you, i didnt very frequent a few of the older sites and i wasnt in forum groups when i was young, but i got into forums more recently and wish they were more common, or just wish it was more like early-late 00s...
for tumblr, i personally feel like its actually TOO mainstream, to where the creators of the site have made it a whole thing and have just ruined the culture of the site and atmosphere. they try to pander to people who have a surface understanding of the site and theyve honestly just been shitty people in general (lots of rampant bigotry and literal transmisogyny from the owners/creators of the site themselves). i miss the old layout and i miss when it was more niche and like 2014 era (albeit without the toxic environment from ed blogs etc etc haha). its also just hard to navigate more nowadays methinks, and there is barely even a community there for fandoms/hobbies etc... feels very repetitive like you said T__T
i also wish there was more personality to the web again, if you know what i mean ? obviously, theres lots of resources for ppl to learn and use html&css and js, and projects like neocities to support and encourage these people to make their own sites, but everyone is on a social site nowadays. theres barely any "check out my blog" "email me" "look at my journal" anymore, everyone is on already established social platforms :<

i agree with everything you said!!! i love spotify, but sometimes it's literally IMPOSSIBLE to discover new music, i know there's a playlist that spotify makes for you for that but the few times i tried it it didn't hit at all lmao
also why is the whole concept of blogging completely gone????????? or livejournal
idk, tbh the webs don't feel unique and personalized
