(im not a freaky lil writer so this is very scuffed)
in the past years since 2020 and fast fashion skyrocketed, i've had trouble deciding on things such as the aesthetics/styles i'm willing to spend 100+ dollars on to fit into. recently, however, i,ve realized how dumb stressing over an aesthetic wardrobe is.
now, don't get me wrong I LOVE aesthetics and i think they are obviously a great thing to have. my problem lies in the fact that ive noticed (my) creativity kinda plummet, i lack personal style and would cling to one specific aesthetic. which again, is by no means wrong!! in my opinion, i feel like latching onto an aesthetic just puts people into a box, limiting their self-expression sometimes. this is at least from my own history.
how did i start developing my own sense of style, and how do aesthetics play a small part?
the first thing i did was actually search up all my favorite aesthetics and styles and just look at the outfits of those who wear them. i used pintrest to make a board and spent at least like...4 hours daily just scrolling and picking cute outfits. afterward, i looked through the entire board and decided on what trends i saw, most of the clothing had a lot of leg focus (??) for example there were lots of leg warmers, knee-high boots, thigh highs, and patterned tights. for the upper body, a lot of the trends were mini shorts and skirts, and babydoll-like tops. as for the styles i usually lean into the most, there were lots and LOTS. of twee influence, as well as mori kei and a bit of scene influence (i have a killer scene obsession).
secondly, i made a list of the pieces i mentioned before, as well as other trends i saw. i wrote everything down in detail from the colors to the exact cut and fabric. this list was by no means a cut-and-dry list of what i HAVE to wear, but rather a way for my crazy brain to feel less overwhelmed.
and finally, once i finished my rinky dinky list i went to the thrift store with my close friends and used my pintrest board as well as my list to go find my first brand new pieces. this step is the most important to me as someone who struggles a bit financially, currently at least :p i focused a lot on tops tho because i already do have some mini shorts, i didn't think it was necessary to overconsume on stuff i already had, i recommend others to think about that as well. besides the actual clothing, a recent step ive been taking is looking on sites like etsy for jewelry and accessories! the most important part of personal expression :3 i feel like the actual clothes you wear are less important than how you accessorize lul
in the end, even a few new shirts has helped me elevate my style into something that doesn't need to fit the newest trends or a niche aesthetic, its just mecore yk? i rul my wardrobe bastard XD!!!!!!
