Productivity games that actually make work, chores and tasks fun!

After getting the game "Spirit City: Lofi Sessions" I decided to look into more "productivity" games. Games that help me track my habits, focus and overall being while also keeping me entertained and from boredom or distraction. Here is a list of the ones I have so far, what I use them for, what platforms they come on and how much they are.

1. Spirit City:Lofi Sessions

Let's start with the first game I mentioned at the beginning! Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a parallel game simulator. In it you can modify your character, your living space and what music you listen to! In the game you level up by accomplishing whatever you need to accomplish with the task list, timer, habit tracker or even write in your own private journal.

You also have the ability to catch "Spirits" which are essentially your pets plus earn tickets as you level up to buy your character different decor and clothes. While you study or work your character will be doing their chosen task while you both listen to lofi, a mix of different ambient sounds OR BOTH. Don't like lofi or the lofi the game provides? You can search for your own music via the game on youtube!

What I love to use it for. Personally I love having my own character. Having my own little me with a cat that looks like my own makes me feel a little more productive. I really love the noise and sound options which I use on a daily and even match up the weather to how it is outside (I have no windows at work so this helps for that as well). I also love to set my character up in fullscreen and have her sleeping when I am on lunch. It tells those around me that I am on break.
I have never used the journal but I have used the Task and Habit tracker. Both are nice but now that I am up to lvl 45 and found all the spirits so far it has kind of made me use these functions less and less. However the game has been getting HUGE updates and the Halloween one will be avalible Oct 9th! My favorite function however is the timer! The timer goes to 15 minutes, however you can add four 5 minute intervals that are meant for you to take a break. Which winds up leading to 75 minute timer.  This helps in keeping me from getting overwhelmed and then going back to work on what I was working on after a quick break.

Price and Platform: As of now it is $11.99 on steam and only available on PC. The developers are working on adding more to the game and having it on different platforms as well.

 2. Virtual Cottage

If you don't have the ability to play Spirit City the next best thing is Virtual Cottage. Much like Spirit City there is a person in a room with lofi music and white noise you can control. The downside is it's a very simplified version of it. The only thing you can edit is if there is a cat or a dog and the music that comes with it is what you get. It does say that the overall theme changes as holidays approach but that's about it. There is a task list you can do and a timer but I don't use them.

What I love to use it for. I do love the game to simply have in the background of my home computer while I rest on the guest bed. I may use the task manager and timer later but since there's no level up or reward options I may just stick to using it as a parallel play type virtual person.

Price and Platform: This is a free game available on Steam, Microsoft and Mac. There are DLCs but it's just more music. They are planning on coming out with a Virtual Cottage 2 which seems like it'll be more customizable but will probably not be free.

3. Habitica

Habitica is a pixel/D&D based task tracker. You add tasks, projects, whatever you want to your list and if you accomplish things you level up, find eggs to hatch and much more! But be careful because if you don't finish your dailies you can also do damage to your character.

What I love to use it for.

This has been the best way to follow my tasks and keep track of what all I need to do. The sections between Tasks, Dailies and To Do's make it easy once you have it setup the way you want it to. I really didn't think I'd like it so much until I started using it. Now its something I use almost daily. I would love to use it with friends as you can make party groups to finish quests faster all while your friends encourage you to do your tasks.

Price and Platform:

Habitica is available everywhere. If you have an internet browser or phone it's free. I really love the app widgets for it. You can use real money to buy gems and get fancier stuff but it's not necessary.

4. Study Bunny and Habit Rabbit

I put both these apps in the same category because they are, essentially the same. In these apps you have a habit tracker, timer, to do list etc and things you accomplish will help you level up your Bunny or Rabbit and gain carrots to get the long eared pet furnishings, food and clothes. Of course I named both of them Jon after our semi famous spacehey rabbit.

What I love to use it for.

I will say this, I used Habit Rabbit WAY more than I used Study Bunny. They are both very cute but I also tend to not use Habit rabbit as much anymore either. That might change in the future so I am still keeping both apps. One thing that differs more between Habit rabbit and Study bunny is the mood tracker. The mood tracker has way more emotions which I really appreciate and I think is a better way of tracking anxiety when you stick to it. Study Bunny is essentially Like Lofi Sessions and Virtual Cottage but I'm not studying anything at the moment so it's not a necessity really.

Price and Platform:

Both of these apps are free but pay for no ads. I went ahead and paid for the best deal because I hate ads. Habit Rabbits was about $12.99 while Study Bunny was $16.99. I thought paying for the no ads on Study Bunny would make me use it more but it really didn't so I'd say if you're gonna get these apps just pay for Habit Rabbits stuff. They are both on android and Apple devices.

5. Finch

Like the Bunny games above, Finch is essentially a self care pet helping you do tasks.
As you do tasks you'll be given rainbow stones to help dress up, buy furnishings and help your finch grow up.

What I love to use it for:

This was the first self help game I actually got and it did help me out a bit in the beginning with getting certain tasks done and tracking my mood. Back then it was a little more basic, only clothes were available. It's advanced a lot but I also tend to use it a lot less mostly because I am not a bird person. It's cute and all but it's not my cup o tea much anymore which is ok. I do however really recommend it if you love the idea of taking care of a little virtual bird. It's a smooth running app and while there isn't a timer it's just a good thing to help you keep track.

Price and Platform:

Like most of the apps this is free with an option to pay for more if you want more costumes and options. There are no ads which is nice so the added bonuses are not needed.

A few honorable mentions:

  • Pokemon Sleep
  • Pokemon Smile
  • Pokemon Go!
  • Pikmin Bloom
  • OtterLife

That's it! If there are any productivity games that you guys would like to see me try out and rate let me know and I'll look into reviewing it for you.
