hauntology

Brown Bobblehead Bunny

Places have always been very important to me. Be it streets, houses, buildings, stairwells, roads, or balconies, to be in a place is to be surrounded by its visuals, sounds, and smells.

Places possess a unique relationship with time, distinct from that of living beings. It dies and is reborn into something new repeatedly. It may undergo cycles of demise and rejuvenation, continuously evolving into something new. It might even remain unchanged, a silent watcher of the ever-shifting world as time becomes fully meaningless to its existence.

Either way, life will take place in places. history unfolds in them. Walking down a street, you may unknowingly follow the same path as a cat did a 100 years ago. You may live in a house that has been reformed, tweaked, and rearranged by 10 families before you, each with their own histories and their own different coloured sofas, each leaving their mark for you to find, such as a tiny dent on the wall or a scratch on the floorboards.

I sometimes drive past my old apartment building since I still live in the same neighborhood. I can't really recognize my old house before my old apartment anymore since my childhood memories are so foggy, but I can probably describe what it was like. There are certain memories I remember, but I prefer not to be invaded by them. I always felt so comforted by my town, and I still do because I remember so much of it when I was little.

Places are haunted by the past by nature and design, since places don't go anywhere. ever. Memories remain, even if they are not tangible. It takes one old person to go down the street of their childhood and remember how it looked in 1943 for the past ghost of the place to be evoked in the present once more.

But that implies that places also carry scars, and I believe these scars are so raw that they're easily felt by anyone. a house that belonged to a serial killer will never bring you peace of mind when you live inside of it. It's haunted by the bloodstains that once were on the floor, the severed head that was once in the safe by the wall, and the screams that echoed down its halls. Those scars don't heal, and they are so powerful that they make the atmosphere heavy and suffocating.

They may interact with time and feelings; places in all their forms are quintessential examples of hauntology and may carry more life than actual living beings. pay attention to them. listen, feel their history and all they carry within the walls, trees or asphalt. Visit your childhood neighborhood and watch your reality shift into your memories as if you're able to walk through them once more. Mold them with the feelings you attribute to them. make new memories for them to carry.

Haunt them forever.
