what i love about spacehey so far

im one of those ppl who never let go of myspace until i had to (when the platform became unrecognizable) and ive always held onto the belief that it was one of the best social media platforms we'd ever have. i made a facebook account before it became popular and it wasnt as shitty at first as it is now but it definitely wasnt as fun. i still stuck to myspace even when everyone jumped ship to fb. i have a hard time letting go of things and for some reason that included myspace.

i made my spacehey account 10 months ago for nostalgia reasons but didnt let myself be too active or get too attached bc i thought it might just die in a couple months. im still scared of that but less so after seeing how passionate An seems to be about this project. there's also a lot of other ppl who seem to be using this site seriously so i have more hope this could work in the long run!!

ok, heres what i love so far:

1. customization. one of the key features of the og myspace was that you could edit your layout and i think thats something a lot of us have missed. right now i have my layout like a throwback to what u could have found on myspace but theres so many possibilities of what you could do and it doesnt always have to be a throwback look

2. bulletins having public comments. i dont remember this on myspace (pretty sure u could only send a message reply, but correct me if im wrong?) it makes it feel more social so i love this change. i dont want this place to be too much like other social media but it is nice to have this one thing thats kind of upgraded (it's like a post on fb or tweet on twitter etc)

3. the age of most ppl ive come across is close to mine. i use twt and insta the most of all socials and its usually more difficult to find ppl my age (im 30) but almost everyone i come across here is like 25-40. i have seen some minors too but its rare! but i do love seeing kids on here who might be experiencing a platform like this for the first time!

4. blogs. i actually didnt use blogs often on myspace, but i miss places like livejournal too (and its knockoffs... i used greatestjournal the most) so i feel this can kind of scratch that itch and i do intend to use it more!!

5. the people!!! everyone seems so chill so far. i hope that lasts awhile...

6. the art project!! it hasnt happened yet as im writing this blog but i love the idea and having a project that gets the community involved. i hope to see more of this even if its just for special occasions!!

7. i cant rly explain this one much yet but the freedom? i feel more free on here to express myself, but that could just be bc this is "new" to me and i dont have too many irl friends on here yet... but i dont feel the same sort of pressure to be "grown up" on here.

πŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™Ύ

what i'd like to see:

1. more photos and photo comments. i dont think we need the albums (tho it would be nice) but a couple more photo slots & commenting enabled would be rad!! just bc that was such a big part of myspace too

2. music. id love to have a profile song again but more importantly i think itd be super cool for bands n musicians to have the option to make a page on here that can showcase some of their work. idk how much work this would be and how possible it all is... but i hope to see something come in the future.

3. an app? im actually unsure about this one. id like an easier way to use this site when im out and only on my phone but id want it to be basically a better formatted version of the site. it wont be worth it if we lose out on seeing ppls customization on their page!

πŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™ΎπŸ™Ύ

i think thats all ive got so far. thx if u read!Β

There's actually a way for you to use a YouTube video on your profile and have it auto play. I did it with mine and hid the video lol I googled how to do it. It was a lot easier than I expected.

I'm totally digging this platform and i hope it doesn't go away! MySpace was so much fun back in the day and I reluctantly joined FB as well. Someone's bulletin yesterday asked if you remembered what song you used to have on your MySpace profile and I couldn't remember until I really thought about it. It was Face Down by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. So fun!

I am very happy with the OG style here. It's nostalgic and makes people have to interact instead of just doing the quick "likes".

In the future, I would love an app, because I think it would be fun to still interact without a laptop. And maybe the inclusion of a few basic emojis because I have to go copy/paste them if I want to use them.

Other than that, I'm so glad I joined and can meet fun friends like you!

Bulletin comments were definitely a thing! And it's one of the things that made myspace great.

Beside that, I agree with basically everything you wrote down. I love this site and I love seeing the minors exploring the site, making it an inter-generational shared experience. It's kind of magical in a way.

I’m all for the app option. Really, it just needs to be the mobile version of the site. I really want the app for notifications. BUT! The thrill of having to login and see if you have anything new is creeping up on me again. And I don’t hate it.

Also, more photos with comments would be great!

I've written a couple blogs, but there's a lot of options for music already! Dig through my blog to find out how to get it.

I agree with everything you have covered. Finding people the same age as you is refreshing! (I’m 30 as well!)

I don’t remember if bulletins were a thing or even used much then. But I do see it resembling as a tweet and a unique way to start conversations.

Tbh, I like this being a personal site people can express themselves and their art if they choose. I feel like when MySpace Music started taking off, it became more about business and profiting off the users. Which I get the company needs to survive.. But it took away the sole purpose of the platform.

I think us communicating with An and even supporting him in anyway that we can… we may have the ability to maintain the integrity of SpaceHey and the work he has done.

I’m glad you shared this blog. I really hope to connect with you more and get to hear your story!

I remember having a phase in my life where i deemed a lot of social media terrible. (it still is yet in different ways) i deleted my myspace way before others stopped using it which i now regret since i can't look back on old cringy posts and photos. I was also the last to make a facebook profile. i wish i could remember my actual reasoning behind it. I guess ill just think i was forward thinking... but honestly i was probably just being edgy.

I agree with so much of this!
(I also still use Livejournal lol)

I was just talking to my husband last night about the idea of an app and I have to say, I'm not really a fan of the idea. One of the charms (at least for me) with MySpace was being connected but not addictively attached to our (flip) phones. Getting excited to log in to see if you got any new add requests or new comments and so on and then you just logged off after a bit and go do something. Play a video game, go out with friends, etc. There was no constant connection to MySpace. It was a nice break whereas nowadays we are constantly getting notifications pinging on our phones, distracting us from real life. We weren't tethered to our phones. So I'm not so sure that I personally would like a Spacehey app but I wouldn't be surprised if one is eventually created.

that's why I personally have notifs turned off for my facebook app, so I only see new stuff when I open the app but otherwise it leaves me alone, but having the app makes it easier for me to visit the website more often and be more active on there. I have trouble being active on spacehey because going on the website on my phone is weird and a lot of the time I'm just too lazy to turn on my laptop just to go on here lol and I also just sometimes forget about the website since I don't have the app easily accessible on my phone like facebook or youtube

i think you are right about the bulletin comments, but i can’t remember for sure! i also love that it’s like the same myspace except now you see people mention their families and the stock market while simultaneously having 2005 as hell profiles hahaha. it’s an incredible mashup of us all reliving our teens but adapting as adults. i also plan to use my blog eventually, though i don’t remember ever using mine much back in the day.
