It was a foggy night in Northburough, and all was quiet. A beautiful town, full of rather cozy stone brick homes and plenty of fertile farmland. Though rather strangely, no animals could be heard that night, not even the rustling of rodents through the foliage. The dirt roads, though muddy, were unburdened by footprints. If there were anybody in Northburough at the time, they would be right to be concerned by its sheer deadness.
Several days later, when most of the fog had cleared, a man entered the empty shell that was Northburough. His thick heavy boots lethargically dragged through the mud. His cloak was dirty and frayed. He hadn’t slept in days, and you could see it in the shadows under his eyes. He had a lean and muscular build, and was dressed in traditional, albeit ruined, mercenary attire. His name was Jacob Infame, and he was tired.
Jacob had been traveling for several days, and had been attacked many times on his journey. The claw marks through his garments and scratches on the leather plates guarding his torso clearly showed that. He was coated in blood and dirt, and desperately wanted a bath, nap, and a good meal.
Jacob walked into one of many unlocked houses and began to methodically and thoroughly investigate it. The first thing he did was check every windowsill, each one he then adorned with crosses made of a dark wood. Then, he lined the doorframe with a thick paste that smelled strongly of garlic, and hung a cross on the doorknob for good measure. Afterwards, he made his way into the bedroom, where he was met with the unpleasant sight of a family of rotting corpses. He sighed, he had been expecting this after all, but the sight of a little girl, curled up in her mother and father’s arms, shook him in a way he rather hated.
Jacob picked up the girls corpse, a morose look on his face, and brought the petite body outside. He then began to examine it in a cold and clinical manner. He first cut both wrists with a knife he kept in his boot. No blood came out. At that sight, he knew he was in for a long, long, night. Refusing to linger on that thought, he went back to work. Cutting her throat, Achilles tendons, and kneecaps, Jacob made sure to completely immobilize her. He then went back upstairs and repeated the process with the parents. By now it was late afternoon, and he still had work to do. He got out his sword, a fairly short and wide blade, and began using it as a shovel. It took an hour, but he was finally able to bury the corpses.
Back inside, he ate whatever food he could find from the late family’s pantry and layed down on the floor to rest. The fully drained corpses meant that the place was a nest for them. It had been a week since he caught word of those things taking over another town. and considering how horribly neglected the town looked, it was about time for the baby’s to start waking up.
Come nightfall, the vampires would awaken.
