i've always listened to music growing up but it wasn't until i was 12 or 13 and i started listening to bts. when people think of music they think of the lyrics but i think all music is fundamentally had two things the lyrics and the sound. in bts's case i didn't understand what they were saying and i was able to hear for the first time in my life. i paid attention to the sound, listening to 'i need u' i listened to just the sound of the melody and the way it changed throughout the song. in 'save me' during rm's rap verse i learnt what panning was (when sound goes from your left ear to your right, think 8D audios). those details really started to make me fall in love, my favorite song is a breakup song and a lot of people judge me for it when i tell them but i liked it for its sound. i like it for the flute melody, the strummy guitar, punchy drums all tied in with gentle vocals. by 14 i wanted to be a producer because i crossed kpop idol off of my list but i really had no experience producing. so i started writing lyrics as i have a love for lyrism. i even have a genius account just to annotate lyrics. then i pulled away from bts for a while and discovered more music bc at that point bts was all i ever listened to.
but i gave up on my dreams of being a producer during high school because i felt like i needed a more practical career. that idea flopped bc i'm a high school drop out now xP anyways i was then shoved into the real world and had to pick what to do for higher education and i hit a yolo, dabbed, and picked sound production. music is a type of sound so it was close enough. but sound is amazing and studying it is amazing. having a deep understanding of sound is just crazy. we all have hearing but how many people understand it? understand why sound sounds like that? how sound sounds like that? i couldn't imagine what it would be like being in a world without sound now and i don't mean being deaf. i met someone who had never really listened to music throughout their whole life at 23. i am younger than that and i was astonished. i couldn't imagine my life without music, with sound.
some music can calm us down and make us feel better. some music forces you to bust a move in the middle of the street. some music can make your heart ache or your ears bleed. some music just hits so fucking hard. music can affect and change human emotions quite easily. music can open you to new ideas, both negative and positive. every sound has a feeling attached to it. loud rock and roll songs for when you're angry. bittersweet, slow, quiet songs for when you're sad. and that's just two examples. humans experience so many feelings and i was always able to find a sound that felt like mine. i think if i was born in the 1700s i'd be a bard. if i was a superhero i'd have the power of music. if i were a my little pony character i'd be DJ Pon-3. my whole life revolves around it.
