now that the spoiler warning is out of the way

I’m gonna be honest, I had very low hopes for this game.

So, Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop came out April 4th 2024, and it’s an apple arcade exclusive. My friend pinged me about it and I..wasn’t that happy (it was because of the apple arcade exclusive bit, don’t leave me out of the fun!). After puyo puyo tetris 2's ... .questionable characterization of the compile cast, I didn’t have much hope that this would be any better. As more news for the game came out, I got slightly more excited. I mean, Lemres was a main character? I’ll take that any day! I still had low hopes though. 

And then the game came out!

Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop (Which I’ll just call PPPP for now)’s release literally crashed apple arcade. Just like when fnf fans crashed newgrounds. Now, I was pretty excited to see if the game was actually going to be bad.

Only to get completely blown out of the water!

I couldn’t play the actual game, so I watched someone stream it. And let’s say that when she got to the main menu, my opinion on the game completely changed. As she played it more, my opinion of it got higher and higher! Fever 2 styled cutscenes? Continuity to the light novels? LEMRES BEING THERE AT ALL??? (okay I’ll stop talking about him….for now!) SIGN ME UP.

Talking more about the light novel part, the main conflict of the game is that Sig is acting strange. He doesn’t want to be called by his name, he keeps bringing up this “power” that he doesn’t want to be sealed away, and most noticeably, his left hand has particles around it! 

This is literally just Sig’s secret. 

THEY’RE FOCUSING ON SIG’S HAND!! AND IT’S A BIG PART OF THE PLOT, I COULDN’T BE HAPPIERRRR 

Talking about the voices now, but all the characters got new directions for their voices and they’re not just reusing PPT2 lines! Though some of them kinda bug me (Amitie), everyone sounds great! They’re pretty funny sounding, but I got used to them.

I was also impressed about how Schezo WASN’T JUST HIS PHRASING! AND RULUE DIDN’T ALWAYS TALK ABOUT SATAN! AND SATAN WASN’T JUST AN ARLE FANBOY! IT WAS OH SO REFRESHING, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE TETRIS GAMES DID THEM DIRTY 😭. THANK YOU SEGA THEY ALL SAID IN UNITY!

Something interesting as well;They brought up Lemres’ family and the tome of sealing! In Klug’s bio, it mentions how Lemres comes from a wealthy bloodline of dark mages, and how he admires him for that. In Lemres’ bio, it also mentions how Lemres KNOWS dark magic, but doesn’t want to be called a dark mage. We also got to know what the name of his town was, it was Elite. Right under our fucking noses. Talking more about the tome of sealing, it’s brought up how Klug is sometimes seen talking to the book, and in the jpn version, there’s a whole section just about the crimson soul! Got cut in the english version though…

Overall, this game seems so promising! Can’t wait until the next update comes out and I get to see the other character’s bios.
