“Sypha still isn't here.” Alucard noted. Sitting by the fire in his elaborate coat, now dirtied, tracing pictures in the sand, he turns to look at Trevor. “She said if she isn't here by sundown we should keep going without her. It seems a better choice than just sitting here pacing.”
“It's not sundown yet bloodsucker.” Trevor was glaring at Alucard, “I'm gonna go look for her.” his gray leathers were rattier than usual, the matted fur lining caked with dirt. He picked up his pack full of supplies and turned to Alucard “You coming toothy?”
“I think I have to.” Alucard sighed. His sword flew to him and floated around his shoulder, flashy as always.
The woods were dark enough on their own, much less in the dim light of dusk that always makes the shadows of the trees so much more sinister. Alucard can't help but think of cave lamps and stone pillars during times like these. crawling into that coffin, the wound on his chest that never fully healed. But Trevor was a different story. For as long as he could remember, the woods have been his solace. He remembered sleeping in trees after getting kicked out from bars, the life of the last Belmont was never an easy one.
Following the path that Sypha said she would take, they headed to the den that she planned on checking out. The only reason they hadn't gone with her is because she needed them to watch for the night creatures that have been patrolling the main roads more and more recently, sometimes dragging corpses with them. Things had been getting bad since that last fuck up at the village.
A rustling in the leaves stopped the two of them in their tracks. 3 night creatures appeared and without a second thought, Trevor and Alucard were back to back. Grinning like fools, the two of them made eye contact over their shoulders, this is what they did best. The first night creature charged, a bipedal brute with an ugly face and an even uglier mace. Trevors whip knocked the mace out of the thing's hand, and before it knew what had happened, Alucards sword was sticking out of its chest. Carrying the momentum from the first beast, Trevor turned his whip to the next creature, this one with eight spider-like spikes for legs and a skinny white torso standing in the center. The whip lashed forward and sheared off two of its legs, Trevor spun and struck out with his whip again, this time slicing off its head. All the while, Alucard had gotten his sword out of the bipeds chest and sent it flying at the third night creature, but this one was different.
It was a lean, 10 foot tall biped wielding a simplistically designed halberd. It deflected the sword with the shaft of the halberd and swung towards Alucard. As Alucard dodged the blow, Trevor lashed out with his throwing knives. The knives embedded into the beast, and it silently turned its head towards Trevor. In a flash, it was towering right in front of him thrusting the halberd forward. Trevor twisted out of the way, a new cut forming on his chest where the blade scratched him. He spun, pulling the knives out of the beast's flank and stabbed into its back, throwing himself upwards and wrapping his whip around the monster's neck.
“Alucard!” Trevor shouted. Alucard ran forward, carrying his sword. He jumped towards the thrashing beast with superhuman height and thrust his sword into its chest. It crashed down, landing on top of Trevor with a very concerning snap, followed by a more concerning scream of pain. “Fucking hell!” Trevor screamed. Alucard heaved the beast off of him.
“Are you alright?” Alucard said, a concerned look on his face.
“No I’m not fucking alright!” Trevor shot back. “My fucking leg is broken!”
“I'll make you a splint, hold still.”
“What about Sypha?”
“Its already dark trevor, we can ask about her at the next village.”
“Shit.”
“I know.”
Alucard applied the splint and leaned Trevor against a tree. It would have been a pretty scene if not for the monster corpses. Suddenly it was quiet, nothing but moonlight, Trevor, and Alucard. The two of them sitting there, thinking about what they were going to do next, but not being able to do anything because of trevors leg. They were stuck here for at least a night. It was their first time being alone together since they met. Trevor looked Alucard in the eyes, Alucard looked back.
“We need fire, it's cold.” Trevor said, completely ruining the moment for the sake of making this story longer.
“Oh- alright.” Alucard said, a bit phased by how awkward that was.
They left the area with the night creature corpses in favor of clearing a fair bit away; Alucard had to be a crutch for Trevor. Now there was a crackling fire, Alucard had caught and was cooking some rabbits. Trevor had managed to limp onto a log to sit on and was now staring intently at the flames.
The two of them ate in silence, the air heavy from Syphas disappearance. The two of them curled up into their sleeping bags, not close together but not far away from each other either. Trevor laid awake, missing Syphas warmth. He consoled himself by saying he would check the den during the day and make sure she was safe. She could handle herself, after all.
Morning came, and Alucard woke up, stretched, and then woke up Trevor.
“Get up, we need to get to Sypha” Alucard said, gently shaking Trevor awake.
“Mmggff- oh shit!” Trevor started awake, hitting his forehead against Alucards. “Fuck!” he grabbed his whip and barked to Alucard “Fucking hell lets go!” and with that, the two of them dashed into the woods. Running as fast as they could, they were able to make it to the den in just under an hour. It was a church-like structure, with no crosses or other religious signs. Already they could see obvious signs of a struggle. There were 6 corpses, all in formal wear and covered in stab wounds and burn marks. Sypha was here.
Not daring to say a word, Trevor turned and nodded to Alucard. The two of them opened the structure's door as quietly as possible and stepped inside. The inside was also very church-like, with an altar at the back; but instead of benches facing it, there were six unopened coffins. Trevor and Alucard walked towards the dias. Laying on top of it was a feminine body covered by a white sheet. And then it moved. With a loud screech, the vampire flung itself at Trevor. It was completely nude and had bright blue eyes and short orange hair, it was Sypha.
