I wish I knew how to connect with people

I've been kinda stuck for a little bit when it comes to meeting new people. I hate bars because I despise being around drunks. I don't like talking to customers because all they do is talk about sports or cars, and I am ill informed on both. I can't just walk up to people and talk because THEN I'm a creep. I have also tried talking to people online, but I get so nervous online, but I think that's a good, viable option if I can stop being so scared. 

It was way easier in school obviously, but as an adult, I feel it's much harder. I haven't quite figured it out yet, but I'm sure I will soon because I really like connecting with people. Talking is nice, especially when you and someone else have similar interests, but even without that, it's nice (unless I have to hear more about sports or cars). Listen, I know sports and cars might as well be the back bone of this country, but goddamn... I am SO tired of hearing about them. Idk, maybe I'm weird for that, but I just... couldn't care less, man. 

Maybe I should go to more conventions and try to meet people that way. I typically only go to a singular horror convention, but I could always expand my horizons with that. If anyone else has experience or ideas they'd like to share, you're more than welcome! I'm just tired of feeling lonely :,)
