Animal of the Day #10

Today’s animal is... the Hooded Crane (Grus monacha)!!

The hooded crane is a migratory crane native to East Asia. They are found in boreal forests and wetlands in south-eastern Siberia and migrate to wintering grounds in Japan, South Korea, and China.

Distribution map of the hooded crane

Despite being one of the smallest cranes, hooded cranes are still quite large. They are typically 3.2 feet tall, weigh 7.5–8.5 pounds, and have a wingspan of 6.2 feet. Their feathers are usually gray, gray-brown, and black, with a patch of red skin above their eyes and a patch of red feathers on their forehead.

An opportunistic omnivore, hooded cranes consume various foods depending on the season and location. They dig for forage for aquatic plants, berries, insects, and frogs in their breeding grounds and feed on roots, seeds, grasses, and small aquatic animals in winter.

Some facts about the hooded crane:

  • The hooded crane is listed as vulnerable and increasing on the IUCN red list

  • Hooded cranes are renowned for their elaborate courtship displays.

ah they look so fabulous :D their lil chicks are adorable too... kind of reminds me of the sandhill crane chicks where i live, except theyre a tad fluffier (and surprisingly short when theyre young). saw some parents with their chicks eating from someone's garden, it was so cute since the little ones were all up in there.

seeing cranes in general makes me in awe of dinosaurs. theyre quite funny animals too. sometimes they'd just show up in parking lots at set times, which makes me wonder if other birds have such daily routines :P X)
